BCS Rankings for November 30, 2008

Umm... why do the computers hate the University of Florida SO much? They have us at an average of 6th place (STILL?!?!?!?!), behind Oklahoma (Really? At #1?), Texas (Really?), Alabama (okay, this makes sense), Texas Tech (didn't we go through this last week?), and Utah (same as previous).

Let's have another really big and long conversation about why the **** the computers hate us. Ready, set, and... GO!

Please be kind and use good grammar.

I Was Waiting For This...

Don’t blame the computers, blame everyone on our schedule. The wheels have come off for LSU and Georgia, leaving us with only one victory (UGA) that even resembles a quality win. Meanwhile, everyone ahead of us as a much better resume. That’s what the computers are built to do – determine who has had the better season – and they’ve done just that. It’s not hate, it’s just objective.

But that's the problem.

They should be determining who the best team is, not the team with the best season. Would rank a team that won all of it’s games by huge margins over lesser schools behind a team that has won all of it’s games by smaller margins to relatively better schools, even if the cupcake-schedule team was obviously a better football team?

And I use hate to imply any sort of conspiracy theory-ish ploy to keep us lower in the polls.

Like not taking Margin of Victory into account, but instead calling it “Style Points” so that they can quantify any way that they want to.

Like limiting Strength of Schedule to opponents’ records, leaving out that the opponents may have had strong schedules too. (Speculation)

Like not caring that we had backups in for probably 10% of our plays this season, and we probably executing everything at full strength for about 50%? That’s like saying a Ferrari sucks because you’ve only ever seen it in suburbia where it is most likely driven at speeds well below the limit, let alone it’s potential.

The arguement is useless for now

If Florida wins next week, they are in. We can crap ourselves if they win and are out. BUT, the BCS is screwed up when Texas can beat Oklahoma, and finish behind the Sooners in the BCS and that determine the division winner in their conference. Yes, the Big 12 is stupid for making their tiebreaker like that, but having computers play such a large role is garbage. Here is my question; if UF and Oklahoma win, you have these one loss teams; Alabama, UF, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, Penn State, Texas Tech. We can knock out the last two and probably USC. Of the four teams, the BCS has to pick UF and Oklahoma since they won the SEC and Big 12. But, at this point, are you confident it can do that? After all, there is a .05 difference between UF and the BCS Championship Game. If you can guarantee me that a SEC Championship win guarantees UF a spot I’ll defend the BCS. But you can’t and no one can.

exactly

Who cares. If you guys beat us, which isn’t a sure thing, then you get in the NC game. Don’t worry about the computers, worry about our defense and o-line!

When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.

ok - here you go

If we beat Alabama I GUARANTEE THAT WE WILL PLAY FOR THE BCS CHAMPIONSHIP.
I posted it here last week and my guarantee does not change.

Don’t worry about any BCS standings until the end because that is the only poll that matters (well, except for determining Big 12 division champs!).

If we beat ’Bama, our strength of schedule will be boosted by a win against a #1 team. Meanwhile, Texas, Texas Tech & Penn State will play nobody and not gain any SOS or other BCS points. USC will not get a boost with a win over UCLA.

Couple that with our would be #1 ranking in the human polls and it will be more than enough to catapult us to at least #2 in the BCS and perhaps #1 since a win over Alabama easily trumps a win over Mizzou.

So stop worrying about the polls and start getting ready for ’Bama!! Hope to see all of you up here in Atlanta!

Sweet.

Let’s ignore the fact that the only reason why the BCS was involved in the Big XII South is because it was a three-way tie between Oklahoma, Texas AND Texas Tech. If you remove the games between the three (because they’re a wash) Oklahoma’s resume blows the other two out of the water. In fact, The Red Raiders are closer to Texas in that regard than the Longhorns are to the Sooners. The BCS made the right call in the Big XII South, will likely make the right call for the National Championship Game and all this criticism will quietly fade away to fail again next year.

Interestingly

Based on SEC tie-breakers, Texas would be playing in the Big 12 Championship Game. Using the 5th tie-breaker (just like the Big 12), the SEC would look to the BCS rankings. Only, under the SEC method, the lowest ranked team is dropped and the other 2 are compared head-to-head again.

I think I prefer that method.

by skigator93 on Dec 1, 2008 12:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

that makes mush more sense. Comparing them straight up just leaves the possibility of the current situation to happen. Its the Big XII’s fault, not the BCS.

Why even argue

Over on the Tide Blog we’ve had some Gator visitors who showed a lot of class and were treated with same. I hope I can manage to do the same. Not many here want to mention the loss to a good Ole Miss team that had one of the toughest shedules in the country(5th I think).Idon’t have the football knowledge that some of you and the tide blog so i hope i don’t screw up the facts. Their schedule was probably figured in and actually helped the gators as opposed to a loss to say Miss St. We’re #1 cause we play in the SEC conference that canabolizes itself and we are undefeated. In one more week you will play us and if you win You will either take #1 or #2 spot(should be #1) Reguardless you will play for the national championship.
Hope I haven’t started any trouble here , it was not my intention.

I took it over last year. It was originally called Swamp Ball. I try to keep it entertaining, but we have stiff competition from other blogs and the real world has gotten in the way this fall as well.

Here's How I See It.

Here are the wins over teams currently with winning records of the six squads in question. Florida is tied for first in quantity, but only edges out Alabama in quality.

  • Oklahoma: v. Texas Tech (11-1), v. Cincinnati (10-2), v. TCU (10-2), @ Oklahoma State (9-3), v. Nebraska (8-4) and v. Kansas (7-5)
  • Texas: n. Oklahoma (11-1), v. Oklahoma State (9-3), v. Missouri (9-3), v. Rice (9-3) and v. Kansas (7-5)
  • Texas Tech: v. Texas (11-1), v. Oklahoma State (9-3), v. Nebraska (8-4), @ Kansas (7-5) and @ Nevada (7-5)
  • Utah: v. TCU (10-2), BYU (10-2) and @ Air Force (8-4)
  • Alabama: @ Georgia (9-3), v. Ole Miss (8-4), @ LSU (7-5) and n. Clemson (7-5)
  • Florida: n. Georgia (9-3), @ FSU (8-4), v. LSU (7-5), v. South Carolina (7-5), v. Miami (7-5) and v. Hawaii (7-5)

Now remember, Alabama and Utah are undefeated. Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech all lost to each other (one-loss teams) on the road or neutral ground, while Florida lost at home to a four-loss team. We have a gap to make up and we haven’t done that yet.

Beating Bama would set them behind us, as well as likely leapfrog us ahead of Utah and Texas Tech. We’ll be #3 in the computers (and probably rightfully so) and #1 in the human polls (that’s the purpose they serve, to be subjective), guarantteing us a spot in the BCS Championship Game. The system will do what it has to do and will likely be vindicated in the end. Nothing has changed.

A few additions

Utah also beat 8-4 Oregon State. Though it’s laughable to include for Alabama, for the sake of completeness…Arkansas State is currently 6-5 and will split the Sun Belt championship if they beat Troy on Saturday.

So say

Missouri beats Oklahoma, and we beat Alabama.

Would that be enough for Alabama and Florida to meet again for the NC? (Although I feel the SEC game is the real NC regardless). Or does Texas or USC jump Alabama? I find that an interesting scenerio.

by Slica on Dec 1, 2008 4:06 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

No Bama.

While they’re a very good team and it’s impressive that they’ve remained undefeated, their resume is simply not strong enough to slide into the BCS Title Game with a loss. They basically have a weaker list of quality wins than we do. If Oklahoma loses the Big XII Title Game, I’d be shocked to see any team other than Texas taking on the winner of the SEC Championship Game for all the marbles.

In that scenario...

I would not be shocked to see USC or Penn State go if Oklahoma loses. Allowing a non-conference champion to play for the national championship won’t happen – at least that was the reasoning given to UGA last year. It would cause a lot of problems and ultimately the demise of the BCS. so if you hate the BCS, you should root for Mizzou.

It's happened...

…twice before and both times it was teams out of the Big 12.
