Alligator Army Notebook: March 3rd

- I refuse to believe that the basketball team is a bad team. Not bad in the sense that they shoot poorly or can't play defense. Bad in the sense that they cannot play consistently at a high level. Mississippi State is a good team, but there is no way Florida should ever shoot 36% against anyone. It wasn't just terrible shooting; there was carelessness to some of the play in the offensive end. We are beyond the point of saying, "Oh, they're young. They don't know any better." I remember being told as a kid to not leave my feet unless I'm shooting. So why did Calathes, at least three times, drive to the rim and then jump but made a pass instead? Or how about the numerous blown or blocked layups the Gators had? I actually asked my friend during the game if anyone on UF knew how to dunk. When you see those types of plays still happening in game 29, it makes you wonder how much these guys are actually learning. At least with Florida's other youthful group, the secondary and defensive line, you'd see them growing up (Joe Haden, Mike Pouncey, Major Wright).

- I think if UF can split the last two games and win the first round of the SEC, they make the tournament. That would make them 23-10 and 9-7 (regular season) in the league. They get the boost of being defending champions, despite playing some terrible opponents. Although, I'll get worried if UF splits with Kentucky and they become more attractive than UF.

- Clemente Figueroa salvaged the final game of baseball's three game set in Miami with his grand slam in the 8th, defeating the Hurricanes 6-2. The day started with a strong outing by Tampa Tommy Toledo, who allowed two runs on four hits in five innings. He was a little wild with three walks over two strikeouts, but he held tight. I really hope that Toledo ends up being the Friday night starter when SEC play begins because for his second start this season, Kyle Mullaney was smacked around on Friday. Sure he was only credited with two earned runs, but in the disastrous second inning, Mullaney allowed three hits, including a home run and a double as da U scored four runs. Had an error not been committed on the first batter, all the runs in the second would have been earned. Mullaney needs to show he can pitch at least five strong innings or it is back to the bullpen for him.

- The Gator Softball team is showing flashes of greatness. After their first loss Wednesday to start a six game swing through California, the Gators rallied and won five straight at the Worth Invitational. The true measure of a team is not how many games do they win, but what do they do with their backs to the wall. We found out yesterday against Stanford how the softball team would do. Down 3-1 in the bottom of the 7th, UF's first two batters reached and were driven in on Mary Ratliff's walk off three-run homer. The 4-3 win makes the Gators 24-1. After the Gators play UCF on Thursday, they begin SEC play Saturday against Ole Miss.
