Meyer encourages fans to ‘White Out Cancer’ at season opener

Florida Gators Head Football Coach Urban Meyer is encouraging Gator fans to trade their orange and blue for white as "Gators White Out Cancer" at the Aug. 30 home football game against University of Hawaii.

In recognition of the University of Florida and Shands HealthCare commitment to cancer research focused on treatment, prevention, control and education, fans are encouraged to wear white shirts and hats to the game.

"We want Gator fans to enjoy the excitement of outdoor activities like football games, but we also want them to be safe from the dangers that come with overexposure to the sun," said Jill Varnes, professor in the College of Health and Human Performance, who helped design the Gator SHADE program.

Fans are encouraged to come by the Alltel Wireless Gator FanFest celebration on the O’Connell Center lawn prior to the 12:30 p.m. kickoff to learn more about protecting themselves and their families from skin and other forms of cancer. The first 10,000 fans will receive a free specially designed Gator SHADE white hat and have the opportunity to meet members of the most successful softball team in UF history.

So let's all listen to our beloved coach and wear white! But make sure you throw a little orange and blue in there somewhere too! See you on Saturday! Gooooo Gators!

Is the team going to wear white jerseys with white pants?

That would get the jersey wearers to follow. The ones who compulsively match themselves with the team anyway.

Don't question my choice of teams, or I will have to go all troll on you.

I usually am against anything but a blue-out or an orange-out at the Swamp

but this is for a purpose. Still, kind of weird to have the crowd coordinate against something like the sun as opposed to something like, I don’t know, the other team. I’ll think about it, but right now leaning toward orange and blue.
