Calls for Brandon Spikes Suspension

Over at Roll Bama Roll, amongst other blogs, there is a strong uprising of fans calling for SEC action against Brandom Spikes. I wanted to bring the discussion over here to get Florida's fans take on this. Are the calls for suspension warranted? Do you believe Spikes should face penalties?

Details here.

So that I don't get mistaken for a troll, I will only respond to any direct questions in this thread only. I merely wanted to know what the consensus is over in Florida about Spikes' actions.

Please be kind and use good grammar.

Maybe the Bama fans should worry about beating LSU and getting to Atlanta first. Besides, even if Spikes is suspended (which most would agree is not outside the range of possibilities) he’d be available for the SEC Championship Game. And again, to my knowledge, Alabama still has to get through LSU to get there.

If you read my comments over on roll bama roll, you’ll see that we want Spikes there for Atlanta. We want Florida at 100%, and Spikes to get any punishments out of the way by then.

You you don't

That’s what y’all write – but that is not what y’all want. I heard the same stuff last year with Harvin, but I saw the celebration in the stands by the Bama fans when it was revealed that Percy was not going to play.

Hopefully, we’ll get to play you with our best players this season, instead of without half our offense like last season.

The worst thing you could do is cage up a beast like that on the sidelines and make him watch the action. That’s what happened the last 2 games and that’s why he came out in sich a rage in this one. That being said, I think he should be suspended for the first half of the next game, or possibly the whole game. He needs to lay off that stuff until he gets to the NFL – where it’s commonplace.

why is alabama so upset about this?

is this football or ballet? has anyone of those posters actually been at the bottom of a dogpile? even in high school? please, spikes didnt even get to his eyes. wayshawn showed no effects (immediate or lasting) of getting his eyes “gouged”. hell i doubt if spikes’ fingers even touched his eyes. give me a break. when you are on the top everyone has something negative to say. alabama is probably just butt hurt that they are number 3 now.

We’re happy to be #3 right now. It seems that the lower we are in the rankings, the better our team performs.

Any attempt to do permanent physical injury to another player can’t be tolerated in the SEC. There’s a difference between playing rough and intending harm.

by squinky86 on Nov 2, 2009 8:04 AM EST up reply actions

How do you know Spikes's intent?

Do you really know (or think) that he was attempting to cause permanent blindness?

by skigator93 on Nov 2, 2009 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

he doesnt

he like many others make up stuff to make their argument better. much like roger below. comparing what spikes did to blinding someone and choking them.

So where does it stop?

Where does the violence become too much? When you actually blind someone? When you break someone’s fingers? Choke someone?

You have to draw a line, and conveniently, the NCAA has done so, they’re called RULES. What the hell is wrong with you? If someone were to come up to you and gouge your eyes would you not expect recorse? Of course you would, because it’s against the law (aka, rules). You sir, bring homerism to a whole new level..

The NCAA does not suspend players for on the field incidents. That is up to the Conferences. (If I’m wrong here, let me know.) If the SEC wants to focus as much on protecting their players as they on protecting their officials, they can suspend Spikes, since it was in an SEC game.

I believe you are correct.

NCAA makes the rules, it’s up to the conferences and officials within those conferences to enforce them.

by Rogerssp05 on Nov 2, 2009 11:33 AM EST up reply actions

It is NCAA to impose sanctions and recommendations to the conferences. It is NCAA policy to review uncalled fouls:

Furthermore, if the review by the conference reveals actions that should have resulted in a personal foul but were not called, the conference may impose sanctions.

Not a good comparison

If I was walking down the street and someone ran up to me full speed and knocked me into the ground, I would want them arrested. If I were playing the game of football, I think an arrest might be going a little overboard.

I do not condone eye gauging, or any other action which should draw a penalty against my team, but I think you are kidding youselves if you don’t think this stuff goes on in every single game to some extent. Yes, even by your own team.

it stops when lame kiffin gets fired

he’s a really bad influence on players and fans

by southman on Nov 2, 2009 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

spikes apperently told meyer it was in retaliation of getting gouged himself.

what the hell is wrong with you? why are you on this site checking everything im saying? im thinking that if some dude shoved his fingers in my facemask, fingers that DIDNT EVEN TOUCH MY EYES, i wouldnt give two shits about it. either way hes out for a half of football against vandy. probably just to save face. but your right, every bad thing that happens on the football field should be brought with a suspension. i take it you have never been on the bottom of a dog pile.

The punishment fit the crime. End of story.

by falcontom on Nov 2, 2009 3:52 PM EST reply actions

I couldn't agree more

even though I didn’t see the game

by southman on Nov 2, 2009 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed. I think a full game would have been better (considering it is Vandy after all), but a 1/2 game is a good compromise.
