Perhaps Florida Should Play Vandy Every Weekend

The Gators most impressive SEC win was at Vandy and their second was today, with a 82-68 win over the Dores. Florida (21-6, 8-4) raced out to a big lead in the first half and kept the distance alive in the second. Five players were in double figures, including Dan Werner's 11 points on 4-4 shooting. Alex Tyus would have joined him, with 10 points and 5-6 shooting, missing perfect with a blown layup. The leading scorer was freshman Erving Walker with 17.

Again, Walker and Calathes were the best players on the floor. While Tyus showed a few offensive moves, freshman Kenny Kadji was the most impressive in the front court. Kadji played only 16 minutes, but had 7 points, 4 blocks and 3 rebounds. He does not have Tyus' offensive game yet, but is a bit better defensively.

Next for the Gators is LSU in Baton Rouge on Tuesday.

Well, the boys have won the two they absolutely had to have (they had to have UGA as well, but too late for that now.) How many more do you think they’ll need (including the SEC tournament) to be feeling confident on the big day?

Jeremy Fowler at the Orlando Sentinel estimated 10-6 in the league and that sounds good to me. I think to make it solid, they have to finish 1 or 2 in the SEC East. Assuming the SEC gets 4, it’d be hard to pass up UF at E1 or E2.

Sounds good to me too; I wish I could believe that 9-7 would be enough, but I don’t (not without a fine showing in Tampa, anyhow.) And we’re right at the point in the RPI where we can’t afford to slip any further. Bama helped us out by beating MSU today, pushing them to the rear of the pack – their RPI is already dreadful, far and away the lowest of the possible tournament teams. (Barring a sudden surge from Auburn or Mississippi – Vandy is now in the ‘auto or bust’ category, and those other two are getting perilously close. And given their RPI, MSU isn’t far away.)

My Thoughts.

I like the Walker-Calathes backcourt and Tyus would be a solid PF. We really need a true center to step up and Parsons to gain some consistency as the SF.

Is going to be that true big man…..he’s coming along. I am still hopeful. We need to make a competitive showing in the SECs and make the NCAAs this season. Next year might be when we can actually compete with the big boys again.
