Hey I'm beginning the college admission process soon and I was wondering if you guys could tell me whether or not I have a shot at getting into your school. I come from a highly competitive private school out of state.

Here are my grades

A, B,B,B,B,C

10th,

Extracurriculars:

Eagle Scout, Newspaper (4 years; Staff Assistant, Staff Writer, Sports Editor, Sports Editor), Water Polo (9), Crew (10,11,12), 10600 literary magazine staff (10,11,12), Marque literary magazine staff (10,11,12)

Work Experience

Day Camp Counselor (9), Started a business painting addresses on peoples' streets

It depends on what classes those grades were in. I got C’s in Spanish, honors chemistry and honors physics (those two ended up being B averages, so it was ok). I also got As-Bs in AP US History, English 4, Stats, Govt, and Comparative Politics. I came with so many political sci credits, I got that degree in 3.5 years. Being from a “highly competitive private school” (or any other school) won’t mean anything unless you’re taking AP, IB, or some other college credit courses. Florida is big on that now, more so than SAT/ACT scores.
That said, I appreciate the journalism courses. That will be a huge benefit when you start working in Weimer. But I suggest Telecom-News as a track; it’s the only one with a set number of students, so you get much better personal instruction. Combine that with working at the Independent Alligator Newspaper, and that will be a very nice start to post college.

The Mighty School District of Hillsborough County. Also, UF is done putting kids through easy classes (they are gutting Liberal Arts; forget about Man’s Food and Age of Dinosaurs). Out of state kids have a decent chance however since they pay more and UF needs the cash. The only state-related business in Florida that’s in the black is the UF University Athletic Association, which is self supported.

Question for you

Since you posted the same question on about a dozen blogs, might we ask what your first choice is? You probably want to consult with your high school guidance counselor instead of a bunch of homer sports fans on teams blog sites to get your true chances….

UF is pretty much one of those state schools that is now next to impossible to get in out-of-state unless you’re a top student, great extra curriculars and have some good recs. I was an out-of-stater and while my grades & activities made me almost automatic at that time, I would probably have no chance of getting into UF these days!

UF is getting harder and harder to get in. But I think it is more that they cannot afford to take more kids, rather than being more selective. Although, I remember when I got in (I was also accepted to Rutgers and deferred to spring decision at UNC), I was shocked that the average SAT was 1310. But there are a lot of dumbass crackheads who can get a 1310. You meet all of them at Preview.

Maybe..

I would think the out-of-stateness helps you, after all, UF won’t have to worry about in-state tuition, or having to pay you to go to school the way they do with high-achieving in-staters on bright futures.
