Best hotel in Gainesville for a game?

Hello hated rivals. I am Tennessee alum, and apparently a masochist because I'm contemplating making the trip down to Gainesville Sept. 19 to watch the Gators (probably, but hopefully not) smack my Vols around.

I've never visited your city, and am looking for hotel suggestions. Ideally this would be a somewhere I could walk to bars from after the game, and walk/catch a shuttle to the game from.

Any suggestions (along with suggestions for bars to drink away my misery/bask in the glow of moral victory) would be greatly appreciated.

Please be kind and use good grammar.

The only hotels within walking distance of the bars are Holiday Inn (midtown), Gainesville Lodge (typical 1950s hotel, close to downtown) and Hampton Inn (downtown). I think most of the affordable rooms on I-75 are booked, so you might have to look at Alachua, Lake City or Ocala. As for shuttles, I don’t know of any, but Gainesville has a very good bus system.

Also, midtown is the student area, except for Swamp, which is a decent restaurant in the afternoon and a frat/soro mecca at night. Downtown is a little more mature around the Hippodrome Theater, with clubs on Main Street. Although, Gainesville is bursting at the seams on a game weekend, so you’ll be waiting in line anywhere. The walk on University Ave from midtown to downtown is about a mile and a half.

Thanks for the tips

Availability dictated I get a room in Alachua, though I’m keeping an eye out for cancellations in the closer hotels.

The bar tips are very helpful.

Jo Noah said it when the team came back following the 2006 title. I remember because I was there. Seriously. I was a photog for WUFT that day.
