Tim Tebow, Steve Young, and PCS

As everybody with a television, internet connection, newpaper subscription, radio, or was in shouting distance of every UF fan on Saturday night knows, Tim Tebow suffered a concussion from a vicious but legal hit. He was knocked unconcious, carted of the field while regurgitating, and spent the night in the hospital. He is back in Florida and is apparently alright. This has all been replayed ad nauseum (pardon this expression) by the sports outlets and such to the point that it hasn't been about the major point here, which is Tebow's health.

After reading a very good post about the amount of pounding that he has taken and that this might not be his first concussion, I began to think about the the quarterback that I as a fan equate Tebow to as an equally mobile and strong-armed passer, Steve Young.

Young was a mobile quarterback with a penchant for putting nose in a play when a slide would do, he was very gifted but never seemed to find a place in the NFL until he was placed in the perfect offense for his skill set. He quickly became revered by his teammates for his leadership and do-what-it-takes to win mentality. But something happened. After a lengthy career of being a quarterback with the ability to pull the ball down and run, Young was forced to retire after suffering his 7th confirmed concussion. Many believe that the total was far higher due to the way that he sacrificed his body for the team. Scientifically speaking, a concussion is just when the brain breaks free of its small connections inside the cranium and slams against the skull, which can lead to wooziness, loss of balance, or if hard enough, a complete system shut down (unconsiousness).

The reason for concern is that studies have shown that after the first concussion, it becomes easier to suffer from these traumatic brain injuries. Young's might have been in the 20s if the total times he had his "bell rung" were counted and when that type of beating occurs there is a likelihood of a condition known as Post-Concussive Syndrome or PCS where the effects of a concussion linger for an inordinate amount of time. There is no real cure for this, only treatments that can lessen the effects. If PCS continues to linger, as it did in Young, then removal from contact is the only treatment that can be prescribed.

Now I am not trying to sound like an alarmist, chicken-little and say that the sky is falling on the Gators season, but I am trying to say this, I would rather lose 3-5 games this year and be able to see a healthy Tim Tebow take the next step of his life without forgetting the ABC's than play with him and possibly win the national title at the expense of his health, and I know that for the joy and passion Tebow shows for Florida and football, and that for all the pain and anguish it would cause, most Gator fans would probably agree with me. Tim Tebow has meant too much to the University and the fans to let him destroy his future if he is not completely healthy in 2 weeks in Baton Rouge. Brantley will be fine (in case you didn't notice, Mississippi State put up 26 running Florida Lite last week). Leave him out of his pads unless he's 100% and then bring him back. It will be the best option for everyone.

Please be kind and use good grammar.

agreed

but dont you think your being a little negative. Its a concusion from a freak fall on another players knee. He wasnt even hit in the head. So sure if the doctors feel Tebow shouldnt play then PLEASE dont play. But dont not play becuase it might happen again.
BTW Tebow playing in collge with his physical stature is not on the same level as Steve Young getting rocked by NFL players for 10 years.

Absolute nonsense

Tebow’s physical stature isn’t going to prevent him from getting concussions. If anything it is the reverse. Tebow’s sturdy frame allows him to play the role of fullback on a lot of third and short’s and just bull people over. He does it quite well, and, as a result, he does it quite often. Because he does it quite often, he gets hit quite often. And a lot of those hits are on or around his head.

Example: the Eric Berry hit. He went head first into Berry and took a shot. Now, because he is a big strong powerful kid, he was still able to fall forward after meeting one of the best hitters in the country head-on. But he still took a vicious shot to the head. He has taken countless others. The one this week was just the worst.

Also, your statement that: “Its a concussion from a freak fall on another players knee. He wasn’t even hit in the head” is so nonsensical that I really don’t even know how to respond. What point you are trying to make? First of all, he WAS definitely hit directly on the head…hard, by the other player’s knee. Second, why would it matter whether he was hit on the head by the UK player or his own player? How is that medically relevant, doctor?

keep beating that horse my man

I can see why UT fans like Kiffin so much.

Meyer indicates that Tebow is going to be fine for LSU

The doctors will really make the call, but I like the first news out of Gainesville today. I also hope that Thompson heals up over the next 2 weeks and is ready to go against LSU. We need him.

Keep beating what horse?

It is interesting that you bring up Kiffin in a response to a post that doesn’t mention him and is completely independent of anything UF v. UT related.

Yeah, Kiffin isn’t in your all’s heads at all. Not in the least.

My point being that Kiffin can't let the Gators go and apparently neither can you

Maybe it’s because of this:

“I hate Urban Meyer with every fiber of my being Whatever that means.

It must be awful to be so helpless in a sport that you actually hate a fellow human being because he just doesn’t give your team a chance to win.

I do hate Urban Meyer with every fiber of my being

But what in the hell does that have to do with the post that you commented on? Stay on topic, please.

The point is

Why would you join this blog AFTER UF beat UT and then just hang around here trying to get a charge out of the Gator faithful?

by skigator93 on Sep 29, 2009 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Because I followed a link from RTT...and it is easy to join

And let’s be clear, you spend way way way more time at RTT than I do here. I am here because I followed a link. I’ve probably been here five times, max. You hang out at RTT A LOT — llong enough to read all the posts and all the comments. Or did you just happen to stumble upon my comment about Mr. Meyer? Oh, how coincidental.

Here is the real issue. How are you going to accuse me of “trying to get a charge” out of anybody? Look at my comment again. Read it real slow if you have to. You see anything derogatory?

Now contrast this with yourself. Not only do you come over to RTT and make derogatory and disparaging comments on a regular basis. You also go over to RTT to find a quote from me, stick it in a response to a completely neutral and reasonable post. And then you accuse me of coming over here to “get a charge out of the gator faithful.”

Might want to think that one through again.

Try this

Since you are apparently unclear how SB Nation works, let me clue you in. Click on a user’s handle and it will tell you which blogs the user is a member of. I simply clicked on yours to see which team you were a fan of, and was not surprised to see UT. The profile also links to all your comments and posts. That is how I found your quote.

If you try the above maneuver on my name, you will note that not only have I never posted as much as a single comment or post of any kind on RTT, but I am not even a member of that site.

Not only do you come over to RTT and make derogatory and disparaging comments on a regular basis. You also go over to RTT to find a quote from me, stick it in a response to a completely neutral and reasonable post. And then you accuse me of coming over here to "get a charge out of the gator faithful."

The above doesn’t exactly ring true now, does it?

by skigator93 on Sep 30, 2009 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

You are right

I have seen your handle on TSK and dawgsports. I thought I remembered seeing it at RTT. My mistake.

Part of the above, though, does still ring true. You clearly went out of your way to pick a cyber fight. That would be all well and good if I had dissed you, your team, or your coach. But I didn’t really do any of those things in my post. So maybe next time just work on picking your spots a little better. There are many places where I say not-so-positive things about Urban Meyer. I just didn’t do it in this post.

And since I have been politely asked to leave, I won’t be doing it at this site.

I don't think he really meant it....

and mixing up the sites is surely understandable. You are entitled to your opinion of Meyer, as you are definitely not the only one who thinks he is an arrogant ass. I think he kind of gets a little bit of a bad rap because he is so cold to the media and never smiles and is always serious. He seems like the kind of guy who might have trouble having a lot of fun.

All that aside, I know that you didn’t really intentionally launch an attack in this post, but forgive me as a Gator if I’m a little overly sensitive when it comes to Tebow stories. I feel like we have to defend the kid an awful lot which is strange given the type of person he is.

I think you should stick around this board so long as you don’t mind a gentlemenly argument every now and again. This site could sure use the traffic and posts.

you are sad...

I know you want to dramatize this as much as possible…

- A concusion is when the brain moves inside the skull from dramatic force, not just from getting a blow to the head. example a car accident at high speeds. There is not a lot of players who will be able to hit Tebow that will cause him to have that type of violent force. There still hasnt been a player, the hit was extremely hard but like a car going 65mph his head slammed against the knee of the player causing his head to go the opposite way his body was falling. Steve Young played against many players who could cause that type of hit to him for 10 years. If you dont get that then you are not using your common sense, If you yourself was playing football with your buddies, I am sure you would amit the chances of you getting a concussion even at the college level would go up greatly. Same thing for Tebow, except him playing college is like you playing with your buddies.

are you nuts!?!

Our back up sucks and plus Tebow has 2 weeks to recover. when I had a seasure (caused by a concussion) it only took me 1 hour to recover the ironic part is that it was on the day we won our second national championship against the ohio state suckeyes I was able to watch the game though

the majority of UF fans think like this, believe it or not. “screw Tebow’s health! We got a championship to win!! He will be alright!”

Really?

Did you take a poll? Because I didn’t sense that line of thinking from any of the Gators I know and I know a lot of them. Most of the folks I spoke with believe that we can win with defense and Brantley until Tebow is ready to return.

by skigator93 on Sep 28, 2009 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions

i think brantley can do well

LSU is not playing all that well. we bring our A game on defense, and we win. on the other hand, many QB’s come back from concussions after a week off. Trant edwards had a concussion, then a bye week, then came back the week after that and played fine. its really up to the doctors, concussions can very, and only the doctors know best.

Saying you have heard it “first hand” implies you have spoken with a representative portion of Florida fans. There is no way in hell you could do that unless you’ve spoken to about 600-700 people.
That said, every fan base has those who think it is more important to win, than protect the players. I knew people who were upset that Cornelius Ingram never came back last year (and he ended up ripping his knee in Eagles’ training camp). I actually think it is part generational and part student/alumni. Younger and students seem to want him to at least sit one game, older think that if Tebow says he is good, he should play. Remember, with a concussion, symptoms like headaches or dizzyness are self-reported. If he wanted to, Tebow could just say he’s feeling good in order to get the doctors to approve. That’s the thinking of those who want Tebow held out, even if he says he is good.

Jesus Christ. I guess I should preface every post I make with, “In my experience…” to assist the less thoughtful.

Only a fool would take my statements to be demonstrative of the entire UF fan base.

Also, there is not comparing Steve Young to Tebow as to their roles on the field. Tebow has and likely will take much more bruising than Young ever did, making the upcoming decisions on his playing significant.

Gentleman only, Ladies forbidden.

by brandonh on Sep 29, 2009 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, you kind of stated it as fact

and not only is it more of an opinion than a fact – but your use of quotations indicate that it was an actual statement by a Florida fan. Maybe someone you know?

The thing that really irritates me about the opinions of other team’s fans about Tebow – is how they couch their statements as looking out for Tebow’s best interest. I beleive most of them just think their team has a better chance of beating us without Tebow and are hopefult that he will sit out for an extended period.

I think Tebow will be fine – Tebow will play against LSU (although he’ll hand the ball off much more than he keeps it). Of course, that is just my opinion, not a fact.

After hearing so many predict that Tebow would get hurt from running the ball so much – he actually suffers an injury because he didn’r leave the pocket and run!

by skigator93 on Sep 29, 2009 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Only a fool

would think Tebow has had more brusing then Steve Young.

HAHAHHA

you have heard it first hand… There are hundreds of thousands of Gator fans, and your few buddies you work with consist of most gators fans. Considering the comments you make, I am pretty sure the people who surround you on a day to day basis is the reason you hear those dumb comments.

by Hook85 on Sep 30, 2009 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea and you know the majority of UF fans

from what i have noticed most UF fans want Tebow to come back when hes 100%, not only becuase we are worried about his health but we realize the brantley will be able to handle LSU. Read the ARTICLE, show me where you see these UF fans, I see ONE COMMENT, thats hardly most uf fans.
