Stay classy Georgia

It will be hard for Georgia fans to hang onto their high horse when an assistant coach is heckling Florida players. It takes a tough man to go after college kids. (via former Alligator sports editor Ian Fisher)

gotta say

the high horse attitude from dawg sports is palpable. they again blame everything but themselves for the loss, and even the editor went as far as saying something like “at least i can look at my kid and be proud that he is rooting for the bulldogs.” jeez. must be hard to breath being so high up in the atmosphere on your high horse. was he not paying attention to the fact that the announcers kept talking about both teams legal problems?

ive said it before, and ill say it again, that bulldog fans are the worst. i root for the dawgs every other saturday, but i cannot stand their fans in the least, except those i have known since the 6th grade.

btw, i love how they say that moving the game will change everything. talk about the excuse of all excuses…

by silverstreak3k on Nov 1, 2010 12:13 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, I have been reading the same stuff from those folks for a while.

The high horse thing is insufferable. They are obnoxious in victory and obnoxious in defeat. They can snatch moral victory from squirrel flatulence. Along with all the vaunted history, lawyers, powdered wigs, and other old bullshit, the pious, wounded whimpering has grown old as well. I sure hope that I am never part of a court proceeding involving these enlightened sages. Their instant condemnation of Meyer, Rainey or anything else UF is a glowing example of their attitude towards due process or second chances. Mark Richt has one of the damndest collections of lawless, dirt road dumdasses ever assembled by a coach but that is never acknowledged by the lawyerly legends of Ga. bloggery. Instead, they spout self righteous bullshit through all the arrests and unsavory acts commited by Ga. athletes, ADs etc. Vomitus Eternum. We are all just sports fans wanting victory for our chosen teams. The vast majority of fans from Fl. and Ga. are good people who love their football so let’s all get off the stump, endure the losses and celebrate the victories.

Yeah I expected a little more.

I’ve been reading their site for a while, and generally like what their writers have to say, but I was a little surprised at the level of deflection after the game. The line referenced above was particularly nauseating…the one about being able to look my son in the eye. Give me a break. I’m not advocating an outlaw system where criminals run wild, but at the end of the day, this is University football we’re talking about. Urban Meyer is not our governor, he is our football coach. He is not our pastor, he is out football coach. Personally, I think that he cares greatly for the young men on his team, and genuinely wants the best for them. I hear this song and dance about Urban willing to do anything to win the loudest from the programs he beats the most often. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that both FSU and UGA fans are the loudest about their belief that Meyer is a cut throat, do anything to win coach….I call sour grapes on both fanbases, and personally, I tire of it all. Great game Gators, let’s keep this train headed in the right direction.

I saw a great retort to a Bulldog making a joke about Rainey

“Caleb King played after he got behind the wheel of several tons of high velocity metal while plastered, endangering the life of anybody on the road.

Chris Rainey served a 5 game suspension for saying mean words."

Spin, Georgia, spin.

by imarealist on Nov 1, 2010 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Yes, I have.

But when the victim didn’t want any charges pressed, said they never felt threatened, and they were charged anyway, it came after a concussion, and the text message the victim sent Rainey right before it said “Go back home and cool off. U have a concussion chris. Ur acting ridiculous.”

That said… I think he still should have sat the season, even if it cost us this game. But making the man out to be a monster is absurd.

Are you sure about this?

I mean, it’s possible. Anything’s possible — he could be scratching his neck, yelling at his own players, etc. I think you’re reaching here, but, even if you weren’t, do you really want to go there? Urban Meyer was gator-chomping at UGA fans on the way off the field. Understand, I’m not keeping a moral tally here. Rather I’m just suggesting that this thread of discussion be left alone.

Good game, Gators. Better team won.

I think there is a difference between the choking gesture to an opposing player and doing the Gator chomp to opposing fans after you have won the game. The UGA coach pictured is trying to intimidate Chas Henry.

I’m not keeping a moral tally here.

Yes you are. And the reason you’re keeping this moral tally is because it allows you to feel superior to those mean ol’ nasty Gators in some fuzzy arbitrary undisprovable way. You feel this need because your team has been getting owned for two decades by your biggest rival, and you’ve got nothing else to hold on to.

by wangalusa on Nov 4, 2010 2:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Urban Meyer was gator-chomping at UGA fans on the way off the field.

That was because he was being Dawg-cussed by a bunch of ass jackers wearing Red Sansabelts on his way off the field…

Probably lucky all they got was the Chomp…rather than a double middle finger salute….

I don’t see Chas Henry in the picture, and Meyer’s antics vs. Auburn’s kicker a few years ago don’t leave you a lot of room to complain here.

if I lost 18 of the last 21 to my rival.

UF has lost this game seven times in my lifetime, and only 3 of them were after I was five years old. That’s part of the problem with older UGA fans. They don’t realize that the population that plays in the game, is in school or recently graduated, has no idea that UGA dominated this series until the 1990s. Yes, the joke that Florida football began in 1990 is partially true. But after 20 years of winning a rivalry, there is a significant shift in who is the better program. It’s harder to take credit for winning the first 24 of 29 games in the series, especially when UF almost stopped playing football due to World War II.

The Once and Future King

by FlaGators on Nov 1, 2010 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

ehhhh, so what?

No big deal – I’m sure the coach was just caught up in the moment. I’m also sure that Chas Henry wasn’t looking to the UGA sidelines for inspiration before his kick. So no harm no foul as far as I’m concerned.

Urban should never do the chomp toward opposing fans or players – that should be reserved to fire up his own team and it should just be left to the UF fans. He should just take the “no big deal – we expected to win” attitude and congratulate his players and walk off the field.

Chas Henry was the best punter on the field Saturday – which is saying a lot since the 2nd best punter in the nation was also on the field. He’s stepped up this season and done someone else’s job to the best of his ability. It’s too bad we didn’t have another kicker, because as bad as we’ve been this season, with a regular kicker, we might be looking at 7-1 right now instead of 5-3.

I’m ready to move on to Vandy. As we’ve seen already, NO game is going to be easy for us this season. I’m making my first trip to Nashville and looking forward to it.

by skigator93 on Nov 1, 2010 11:51 AM EDT reply actions

this was a big win tho

it helped knock a rival out of the sec race, and its always a big game. urban can chomp all he wants to the stands, just as the entire bulldog nation can do whatever it is they do to gator fans after a win.

i agree that the choking thing is stupid, and didnt really matter. its more immature than anything. i just love calling out uga and their fans for their hypocritical nature.

This is why I like the University of Georgia so much; a great school, a great town, great tradition, and fans who flip out because their biggest rival has dominated them in the last 20 years. I honestly did not realize UF was UGA’s biggest rival until I went to Athens before my senior year of high school and saw a store called “Gator Haters”. I always considered FSU and Tennessee the biggest rivals.

For what it's worth

The hand gesture is a play signal. If you watch enough football (or baseball), you’ll see coaches make this gesture a dozen times a game. It’s easy to do, to recognize and to understand. That’s why they do it.

But, by all means, please continue to make productive use of your day.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ve never played sports before. Someone should have let Chas Henry know that so he didn’t look like an idiot when he ran to the UGA bench after the game to taunt them. Unless Henry also has never played sports before and seen someone choke themselves as a play call.

by aproposdenada on Nov 1, 2010 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

You don’t have to accept the premise. I think it’s pretty clear you have not accepted anything that has been said. You can keep up your flame war with whoever you like because I almost never ban people.
But my point remains that it is interesting that Georgia likes to claim the high road when it comes to morality in this series, while one of their coaches appears to give a choking gesture to Florida’s kicker. Since you know so much about sports, I’m sure you would understand why someone would be upset when an opposing coach goes after a player not on his team. The fact is that each team has their warts and goons and classless acts. If I’ve done anything improper, it’s dragging your silver britches into the mud with the rest of the SEC.
By the way, if you actually read this website, instead of jumping on for flame wars, I hope you would find that we are fair to players. We pointed out how hypocritical it was that A.J. Green was suspended for four games, while Tim Tebow was advertising his future clothing company as a player. We also were much more critical of Meyer’s handling of Chris Rainey and Carlos Dunlap, than either player. I also wrote that I’d rather see Rainey suspended for the season or half season. We also wrote extensively on UF’s problems with crime and the football team, again laying the blame on the university. As I said, you don’t have to accept any of that.

truthfully, I’m not so sure that Florida is the better team this year. I think we have slightly better talent, but then again, we don’t have an AJ Green. Murray impressed me after that first half. that urban was responsible. im sure steve had his input tho. steves imprints were all over the place in the second half. my dad (a big dawg fan) and i were joking that steve’s gameplan for the second half was to run out the clock… it was run left, run right, sack, punt.

That I’ve seen Urban get “fired up” this season. Finally!!! There’s no doubt that a coaches fire/emotion translates into his players energy/performance. I guess if you can’t get jacked up for UF/UGA then its time to hang it up. If a coach sits on the sidelines like an emotionless robot (Randy Shannon, Tyrone Willingham) then everything goes to hell. Looking forward to 11/27

He did, I don't agree with that he let guys off without any punishment.

I would argue that at times he is a better disciplinarian Pre 1999 than mr. Meyer. Randy Moss example. And I’m pretty sure we never had 30+ arrests in a 5 year span.

I would say forward looking our current coach doesn’t accept the lack of discipline and respect that seems to be festering in g-ville.

by travy on Nov 2, 2010 9:19 AM EDT reply actions

People, get over it

There are large amounts of classless asshats in both fan bases, and each one chooses to ignore it’s own and lambaste the others.

Each university has a lot (a lot) of arrests. Each punishes kids in a semi-but-not-entirely consistent manner. There are excuses for each case (only if it’s your team) and reasons to raise holy hell in others (if it’s the other team).

Take a moment to step in the other fan-bases shoes. They hate you, they hate your team and they will nit pick every last decision that is made re: discipline while glazing over their own teams transgressions. Shit happens. Glass houses abound.

Urbs gets a little more credit for being a robot mercenary in part because Richt is always regarded as a bible-toting, jesus-loving individual.

Calling all your TOs when the game is over. Dick Move? yes, but if I were an UF fan I would just say “fuck you UGA, suck it”. Same way I say, “Grantham wants their kicker to choke? Good, suck it UF”

It’s a rivalry, and a very heated one. Coaches want to win, players want to win, they want to embarrass the other team. Peoples JOBS are on the line in these kinds of rivalries. This isn’t golf. This isn’t a gentleman’s sport. You can go watch tennis or bowling or baseball if what you saw Saturday bugged you so much.

by knowshon loves legos on Nov 2, 2010 10:45 AM EDT reply actions

I compltely agree...

and have said as much here, and elsewhere. It’s a rivalry, and this stuff happens in rivalries. Just so that you’re clear though…none of us are really that upset, or bothered by Grantham’s actions. It’s the annoying deflection, and denial that’s going on by asshats with zero intelligence like the UGA fan known as erk…He is the kind of fan, that all good fans hate. He is the kind of ass clown that likes to take advantage of a moderator’s leniency, just to irritate the other fan base…Most of us can keep this game in perspective, and see it for what it is. Thanks for stopping by, and Go Gators….
