I've been supportive of our coaching staff and players this season. I've been realistic about the fact that we've had a mass exodus of coaches and players due in large part to our great success over the past four years. Though I'd love to see us compete for a national championship year in and year out, I know that's not a realistic goal. I also know it's not possible for one team to win the SEC every year, and for that matter, I fully comprehend that every program, no matter how great its success over a prolonged period of time, will eventually have a down year or two.
But one thing I don't accept is that our team can't be generally competitive against teams with equal or lesser talent, with coaching staffs that have similar credentials. Since I'm not a complete and utter moron, at least to the best of my knowledge, I can't pretend that bad decisions aren't being made on the sidelines, that certain coaches in high-level positions haven't performed well below minimum expectations, or ignore the fact that our team is not only uncompetitive -- it's not even good enough to rank as 'below average'. Frankly, this is an atrociously bad football team in almost all phases of the game, starting with the offense. It's nonfunctional. It doesn't work. The pieces are basically broken, lying on the floor, and the coaches stand there gaping, citing execution problems. But it's not player execution.
These players want to win. They are trying as hard as they can. They are doing what they are told. They are heavily invested in this debacle. They are also supremely talented. For our coaches to repeat week after week that we have 'execution problems' is a slap in the face to the young men who wear the uniform of the Florida Gators, and frankly it is a direct insult to the intelligence of our fanbase. Our coaches aren't manning up and accepting responsibility. Steve Addazio has been doing his best Baghdad Bob impression all season. Urban Meyer seems to be only loosely involved with the team. The playcalling is awful. The coaches reveal their true fears with their gameplanning, and make changes to their processes at glacial speed. If there's not some burning fundamental incompetence at work as a kernel deep within this flowering cluster***k, then you can slap my ass and call me sally.
No more pussyfooting around, Urban... I heard a crowd in the Swamp tonight (yes, I was there for this abomination) that was in the throes of bloodlust. I've never heard sounds like that in the Swamp before. I've never seen fans so angry to a man and woman. I understand the telecast revealed some of this discontent. I can assure you it was only a small fraction of what I saw in person.
In short, heads must roll. The grace period is over. The gloves are off. The product we have is unacceptable. "Working harder" isn't going to fix it. "Player execution" isn't going to fix it. No, only a good old-fashioned bloodletting will cure this disease. In our hearts, I think we all know this is true. And it needs to start with 'Vitamin A'.
