ESPN says Charlie Weis targeted to be Florida offensive coordinator

ESPN has talked to two sources that say Charlie Weis, the former Notre Dame coach and current Kansas City Chiefs coordinator, will be the offensive coordinator under Will Muschamp at Florida. Weis would would bring a pro-style offense and as former New England coordinator, would come highly suggested from Urban Meyer's friend Bill Belichick.

The sources tell ESPN that Weis would take the job, but remain with the Chiefs until they are eliminated from the playoffs. Chiefs coach Todd Haley would not comment on the report.

If true, its a great OC hire

His work with the Patriots and Chiefs as OC was awesome.

But why would he leave the pros?

The story is

That Josh McDaniels worked better with Matt Cassel in New England than Charlie Weis has been. Also, Weis & Healy don’t get along well.

I don’t get it either, I think Weis & BOOM will clash as well. Weis also doesn’t strike me as the type of recruiter we need. Simply waving Super Bowl rings around might not do the trick.

But, seeing what he’s able to do with a roster chock full of 4 & 5 star talent will be interesting.

All this said, I don’t think it’ll happen. All the “Sources” lead back to Dooley from the Gville Sun.

The reporter who is behind that story is clearly on some sort of narcotic.

The Chiefs was from 4-12, third from last, to 10-6 and in the playoffs with Weis directing Cassel.

The Pats went from 16-0 to 11-5 and missed the playoffs with McD guiding him

Also, personal stats >

YEAR TEAM G CMP ATT PCT YDS AVG TD LNG INT FUM RAT

2008 NE 16 327 516 63.4 3693 7.2 21 76 11 5 89.4

2010 KC 15 262 450 58.2 3116 6.9 27 75 7 2 93.0

Completion percentage notwithstanding, his year this year is WAY better.

Small useless fact – the Chiefs are 2-4 vs their division, 8-2 vs the rest. They might not be such a joke in the playoffs.

Not sure if serious

To get to a BCS bowl a SEC team has to either win the SEC and/or finish ranked in the top 14. As an independent Notre Dame gets a BCS bowl for being ranked, no matter how deserving or what their schedule looked like or winning a conference, nothing. ND had no business in a BCS game for several years in a row and got humiliated.

Umm, Cassel has thrown 27 TDs vs 5 picks.

He’s not throwing for 300 yards per game, but he is also not playing in a dome or in Florida.

They have a backfield that has a shot at having two 1,000 yard rushers. They play in KC. They have no need for a Manning type of player.

Now, look at Cassel’s stats now vs when he played on the Pats’ juggernaut offense. Much better now.

It begs the question – is Cassel that good ? Can he be a “system qb” when he’s had success in two different systems ?

Or, is Charlie Weis that damn good at running an offense.

The guy was the OC for the New England Patriots who won Superbowls, was a head coach at a top program and had some decent years there, and is now the OC of the Chiefs who have been one of the biggest surprises this year with an offense that is killing it. The guy knows what he is doing with offense. Then I hear complaints about recruiting. Are you telling me if you were a high school kid you wouldnt want to play for a guy who has superbowl rings, ties with some of the best people in the NFL, and was a former NCAA HC? For what it's worth...

I was a little worried when I heard this.

The good:
1. The Patriots version of the spread is both pro-style and it utilizes the pre-snap read, which is enough like the spread option for an easy transition.
2. The guy can call some plays.
3. Those three rings will look good in a high-school senior’s living room.

The bad:
1. Those rings will look good until he starts talking.
2. He’s a bloated douche-bag.
3. See # 2

Then, I remember who our offensive coordinator was the past two years. Verdict – UPGRADE. Really, it’s like going from a $50 hooker to Pamela Anderson.

I understand people’s hesitation about CW but I am PUMPED.

Charlie Weis’ failures were as a HEAD coach. His offenses were pretty darn good with limited recruiting abilities. It was his defenses that were failures. Not a concern now.

He gets to recruit and mold ONE side of the ball, the side he knows and has shown can work.

If this turns out to be true, this is HUGE !!!

Florida will be able to attract top flight receivers as well. Gone will be the “Florida receiver” stigma. Florida will be able to attract guys like AJ Green and Julio Jones, not losing out to them because of a “gimmick offense” as in years past.

Weis’ rings and NFL resume means the best of the best will come to Florida because there are NFL teams who’d love to get their hands on Weis products.

What the hell is wrong with you people who are not happy with this?!

Charlie Weis is a known offensive guru in the NFL and has had great offenses every where he has been, including Notre Dame. Only reason he was fire at ND is their defenses were horrible and he was the HC so he was held responsible. Maybe Gator fans do expect way too much if they are not happy right now…For goodness sake our OC was just Steve freking Addazio!!!!!! And you people are not happy with Weis.

I’ll believe this when I see it.
