NFL Combine Preview: Brandon Spikes

LB Brandon Spikes (Scheduled to work out with Group 9 on Monday, March 1)

Size and Statistics: 6-foot-3, 258 pounds. 307 total tackles, 6.5 sacks, 14 passes defended, six interceptions, four returned for touchdowns. 2008 First Team AP All-American.

In 140 characters or less: Has everything you want in a linebacker. But is he getting slow?

Strengths: Spikes is a very strong and aggressive player. As a run defender, he can get to the line quickly and shut down the hole.

On blitzes, Spikes can lineup outside and get to the quarterback if he times it right. In coverage, Spikes understands schemes and can get between the QB and the spot, often returning interceptions to the house. He can punt, too.

Weaknesses: Did not have a good senior season as leg injuries slowed him down. Spikes can be too aggressive, whether it is over-pursuing and leaving his assignment or checking the eyes of an opponent. He is a form tackler, but won't chase guys down.

Character: People will point to his eye exam of Georgia's Washaun Ealey, but he's never been a problem off the field and turned down the NFL for one more shot at college glory. For all the fury he brings on the field, Spikes is a soft spoken leader who leads by example. Florida's defensive intensity was much higher with Spikes on the field.

Where will he go: Buccaneers at 44. As a Bucs fan, I will immediately buy a Brandon Spikes Bucs jersey, even though no adult male should wear a football jersey, unless it says, "I HATE FSU," on the back. Also, Spikes would replace Barrett Ruud, who sucks. They're not saying, "Ruuuuud," they're saying, "Boooooo."

No way

Dolphins @ 43. Brandon Spikes is the next Zach Thomas… outstanding player and leader with off the charts football instincts, who is going to be undervalued by something like combine speed

Wait.

Why should no adult male wear FB jersey unless it says that?

because it's gay

Not gay in a homosexual sense, because there is nothing wrong with people who are homosexual, but gay as in “dude, you aren’t going to wear that jersey out, are you?!?!”

I agree with mlm that it’s fine for kids to wear jerseys, and to hang posters of your favorite player in your room….but like the posters, you should get rid of the jerseys when you are old enough to start dating (regardless of whether you date girls or other guys of course).

Football and basketball jerseys are for kids. Baseball and hockey jerseys are ok, but barely. Men shouldn’t wear anything that doesn’t naturally fit. Posters are a different story. I have Muhammad Ali and Tebow Heisman posters in my den. But framed, so they look classy.

Why Baseball

The coaches look so rediculous in full uniform.

Thats dumb

When its ok for an adult to wear a sports jersey.

1. If it is your college team and its on saturday. Then you can wear it anywhere, even a nice resturaunt. It pretty much says to everyone; I was or will be at home all day watching my team kick your teams ass.

2. At the teams sporting event itself. Especially Football. Baseball you get away with a T-shirt.

3. If you have shoes, pants, and a hat that matches the jersey. Then it looks gangster. Now the only question is, should you be trying to look gangster? Well save that for another day.

4. If your work has support your team day. They will allow you to replace the regular uniform with a sports shirt. You can wear your Alstott jersey then.

5. If a buddy invites you over for a weekend BBQ and he is a huge fan of your teams rival, your jersey is a must, and your wife and kids should probably have one on as well.

I only agree with #5

….and that’s only because I wouldn’t care what an FSU fans thinks!

Otherwise, jerseys are for the players. Just wear a t-shirt or collared shirt with the team logo. That goes double for face/body painting. Super Gay.

lol

And the shirt must be tucked in, and probably a tie if someone from work might see you. Also ensure you wear the T-shirt with Jean shorts tucked in with a awesome matching orange belt! lol

The Bucs also have a chance at getting Spikes.

Ruud is due an contract extension or whatever, and the Bucs havent been so quick to give him one yet. Spikes will be great at MLB in a cover 2 defense in the NFL. Any defense where he isnt expected to do much man covereage because he is slow, but is great in zone and reads hovers to the GREATER then any LB in the draft.
