Game 13: And so it ends
Urban Meyer's final game as a Gators coach was not perfect, but the Gators had more talent and made more plays in defeating Penn State 37-24 in the Outback Bowl.
Penn State led 24-17 with about four minutes remaining in the third quarter, following a sloppy first half on both sides. Florida began their comeback with a Chas Henry 47-yard field goal, one of three Henry hit on Saturday. While Henry did not have an All-American punting day, he gave UF nine points that kept them in the game. Florida would take the lead on a Mike Gillislee touchdown dive, following Brandon Hicks' interception of Penn State's Matt McGloin.
The Gators defense was why Florida won today's game. UF shutdown Penn State in the 4th quarter, leading to another field goal. For the finale, with Penn State driving to a possible winning score, Ahmad Black took his second interception of the game 80 yards to the house for the final margin. Florida forced five turnovers in the game, all interceptions.
The first 40 minutes of the game did not inspire much confidence in Florida being able to shake off the awfulness that was their 2010 offensive output. On their first offensive play, John Brantley threw an interception, as he was 6-13 for 41 yards. If Brantley is hoping for a release from his scholarship, today might have put the final signature on the letter. Trey Burton, who was used sparingly after fumbling on the goal line driving to tie the score at 7-7, had two carries, two catches and one attempted pass. The Jordan Reed Show took center stage instead, as the freshman was 8-13 for 60 yards and had 68 yards on the ground. Omarius Hines also should get some bandwagon jumpers after two badass offensive plays, including the score to tie the game at 7-7. Of course, as is typical of the mighty Steve Addazio, Hines only got four touches in the game.
If I may go off message here, I was more emotional about seeing the final game for Black and Mike Pouncey than Urban Meyer. Black and Pouncey are part of the vaunted Lakeland Dreadnaughts class, football's equivalent of the Oh Fours. Pouncey might not be able to throw a straight snap, but he demonstrated why he is an NFL prospect. Watching him pull 30 yards to make a lead block really is a thing of beauty.
As for Black, where would Florida have been without him this season? He launched himself into bigger men all season, including today when he busted his face breaking up a pass. His second interception today was the perfect ending to a very imperfect season.
Like Meyer, their Florida careers are over, but we will see them soon somewhere else. Starting tomorrow, we should hope to see more of Jordan Reed and Omarius Hines.

Jordan Reed
was terrible today I thought. He can’t throw either.
Florida has no QB for next year.
Reed v Brantley v Burton
Please tell me this is the end of the Brantley error.
BTD: Reed is better than Brantley by far. I admit that he had a lackluster day, but for most of the season, he wasn’t even practicing as a QB. PLUS, he is just a freshman. I suspect he has a much steeper learning curve than Brantley (who will be a senior) and Burton. Having said that, I agree that it would be nice to have a solid QB. But among the three, Reed is definitely the best. He was the leading passer and rusher.
Forget about Brantley
He’s finihed.
But Reed is not the answer. Simply not accurate.
If Weis is coming in, he won’t play a QB he throws that badly. He simply won’t.

ahmad black is the smallest but perhpas the best of the long line of great florida safeties. what a player!
he's up there with the legends
such as Spurrier, Wurferrel, Tebow, Spikes, Smith, and other Gator legends
Mathew 19:26 "With God, all things are possible"
Any team that drafts him will be thrilled
Chris Coghlan is the 2009 NLRoY (that's a +1 for me!)
Josh Johnson should (but won't) win the 2010 NL Cy Young!
Reed wasnt so great today, not horrible but...
I am with you, with an entire off season to practice he should be able to work out the kinks…But yea he probably wont win a Heisman unless he has a 180 like some other black QB that went here and nobody ever thought would win a Heisman.

Keeping with the theme...
I loved how during the introductions, Tirico compared Jordan Reed to Cam Newton instead of the big, former Gator running QB every other TV personality has mentioned at least twice a game this season… wonder why…
Anyways, with Weis coming in and Muschamp moving towards a pro style offense, I don’t see Jordan Reed filling that role. And I think this season has effectively ruined whatever talent Brantley once had. Maybe if he sticks around this spring, has some good practices, gets a game plan that benefits him instead of drives him out of football, who knows. I hate to say it, but without setting foot on campus yet, I think Driskel might be the front runner for QB1 next season.
all in all, makes me wonder what is really wrong with the pass offense
jb going for the 4 yd throws because he can’t see the field well enough
or because our receivers just can’t get separation
the fact that reed doesn’t throw downfield either suggests he has the same issues, or it is the receivers
be interesting to see some game film that gives a view of the whole filed at once, rather than tv-view
I may be in a rut, but at least I know where I'm going
...to DFA TLR
I have watched game tape from the season here n there...
Brantley misses wide open receivers because he stares at one side of the field like a deer in the head lights.
Reed barely ever gets a chance to throw at all, and when he does he’s thrown a few deep balls but for the most part they are usually designed to be short dump offs.

yea
you can see his head on tv and he tracks his no. 1 option pretty regularly
by necessity or choice was what i wondered about
I may be in a rut, but at least I know where I'm going

Little bit of celebration in me, but
I think JB’s confidence has been shot this season. Think he can still turn into a productive D-II QB at VSU, J-State, or otherwise, throw for unreal amount and get drafted on potential. I don’t believe that the fanbase and familial pressure here is good for him.
This offense is unduly(Word?) horrific, but there are a lot of misplaced[pouncey] and underutilized[every receiver but DT] and misguided[Addazio’s gameplan] players about it.
Amhad Black—-you made my day and saved me for always saying you were the biggest team player of my lifetime (and that you and Henry were tied for MVP). Hands down one of the best Gators of all time.
Go Gators and sorry Temple….
More celebration than i thought,
Whole point was the question of whether Reed is that weak from the shoulders up or wether he has gotten single-digit snaps in practice for B each week. Thought he was very unimpressive with pre-snap reads and decision post, but understand the handicap that [OC name redacted] put him in.
Thoughts (please give me false confidence, but I don’t see it)?
Black
Great player – I’ll miss him.
BTW, he was injured when a late arriving Will Hill (what else is new?) accidentally speared Black in the back of the helmet. Figures.
Missed watching the game with you guys, but still watched it on my own...
Cant complain. Not gonna waste energy on Addazio since he is GONE.
And Ahmad Black was absolutely the perfect ending. I nearly fell off my bed when he caught that 2nd interception…and not for the magnitude of the play as much as seeing #35 doing it. Black has 2 of the greatest INTs in UF History.
Jelani Jenkins was great, too. Yay for him (and me)!
And thanks to Meyer for everything. He made it tough on himself by being so good, that we all had trouble accepting less than a National Title because of him. Thanks, and I forgive you for Addazio.
What a fitting game. Brantley throws a pick on his first pass and Ahmad Black makes a clutch INT to seal a big game. Throw (pun intended) the irony of Reed coming in and starting 5/5 in passing and this game pretty much summed this season up nicely.
Congrats! from an LSU fan--good to see Urban happy after getting that last win.

Brantley
I don’t want to pile on to the poor kid, and I’m focusing on the positives, certainly (thank God the team sent Urban out with a win) but Jesus Christ, John Brantley is the most frustrating Gator QB I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching. Surely he has to rank among the top 3 worst QBs to play at UF in the modern era (maybe ever?) Yes, Addazio might make him look worse than he is but he is plenty responsible for the terrible productivity of this offense. I can’t think of one thing he does well other than throw a pretty spiral.
I am hopeful he moves on for everyone’s benefit. Jeez, I can’t take anymore of Brantley.

So hard to tell given that they played in such different eras of CFB, but...
Brantley might just be worse than Gavin Dickey…
You may not like what I have to say...but somebody has to say it...
It begs the question...
… can you remember a Gator QB that looked worse?
I can’t.
Orange and Blue Hue: The World through GATOR-colored Glasses -- http://www.orangeandbluehue.com
As I said above...
Gavin Dickey…maybe…
But you have to look at what Dickey had to work with…nowhere near thelevel of talent around GD that Brantley had/has around him…
And I’m pretty sure that Dickey’s stats are certainly better…hafta check the old Croc media guide for verification on that though…
You may not like what I have to say...but somebody has to say it...
He just didn't get better
As the season went on he just got worse. He would rifle the ball over the heads of open receivers and I didn’t see him throw a good deep ball all year. Not one. Still, if he had shown fire or leadership that may have been enough. But nothing. I wish him well at a smaller school but he’s not an SEC QB.

Maybe Brantley just doesnt like football that much.
Some people have all the skills, and we know his family and friends wanted this life for him but he just doesnt seem that into the game, as if he could care less if he is in the game or not.

Wow after a crappy 2010
2011 has been much nicer for me. First the Gators and now the Seahawks in the playoffs? Sure theyre gonna get killed, but I find it amusing to see the NFL having the headache of a 7-9 team in the playoffs…suck it nfl!
Its been a good two days.
