The Gators on National Signing Day

[Update] Add Dwyer QB Jacoby Brissett to the list. But his Momma is pissed.

Will Muschamp is trying to hold it together man. Muschamp's first significant act as a Gator is to keep UF's 2011 signing class together, which is not as lofty as in previous years. If you're one of those fans who reads recruiting rankings like they are accurate readings of the future, today might not be your day. UF started the day 17th in Rivals' rankings, behind five SEC schools and Florida State.

Like last year, here is a list of players who have their letters of intent in or have already enrolled. The remaining we hope to update later with "IN". Maybe we can get some surprises too.

Early Enrollees

RB Mike Blakley

LB Clay Burton

K Kyle Christy

QB Jeff Driskel

TE AC Leonard

WR Javares McRoy

DB De'Ante Saunders

Not yet signed

DB Jabari Gorman- IN

DB Chris Johnson- IN

OL Tommy Jordan- IN

RB Hunter Joyer- IN

DB Louchiez Purifoy- IN

DB Marcus Roberson- IN (Will this be UF's biggest get today? He originally picked Texas Tech, then Auburn, now UF.)

DB Valdez Showers- IN

LB Graham Stewart- IN

WR Ja'Juan Story- IN

OL Trip Thurman- IN

DE Tevin Westbrook- IN

As always, if you see news on any player, comment below with a link back to a legit source confirming it. Linking to a guy who says he is in the UAA on Swamp Gas is not a legit source. ESPN or Scout is. We'll update the board accordingly.

I love how these kids think they will win a NC with Ohio State....

Ohio State gets whooped by SEC teams everytime!

tOSU beat Arkansas.

They don’t get “whooped” every time.

by KnoleR3 on Feb 2, 2011 8:47 PM EST up reply actions

That was Ohio State’s first victory over a SEC team. EVER.

by FlaGators on Feb 2, 2011 8:49 PM EST up reply actions

So what?

The point is, it happened. The original statement said that tOSU gets whooped by SEC teams everytime. Ohio State is entirely relevant to the National Championship hunt. Moreso than almost anyone. Every year they’re up there. It isn’t far-fetched to consider the possibility of a NC at tOSU.

by KnoleR3 on Feb 2, 2011 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

It isn’t far-fetched to consider the possibility of a NC at tOSU.

It is in my opinion.

The only one they’ve gotten since 1970 was a bogus one against Miami in that if there is a competent referee in the secondary who understands what constitutes a pass interference infraction, Ohio State does not win that National Title. And the other two times they have recently played for the national championship were a 41-14 loss to the Gators and a 38-24 loss to LSU the next year.

Could they get there again because the Big 10 is a sorry conference? Sure. But they won’t come close to winning it if they are matched up to an above average SEC team or even an elite ACC, Big 12 or PAC 12 school. It’s just not going to happen.

They beat Arkansas.

And should have killed them. Arkansas very neck and neck with Auburn until the last few minutes of the game with their backup QB.

OSU beat the team who best played the national champs. The Miami game was nine years ago.

The OP is trying to cover a terrible national signing day for UF by referring to Grant to tOSU as a suprise. It isn’t. As of right now, tOSU is in a much better position to win than UF. Anyone who denies that is delusional.

You do realize you are talking to SEC fans, about a Big Ten team.

We didnt get the big dogs

But I think for our staff being in for 2 weeks I am pretty amazed that we kept our staff and added some. Plus everyone knows that FSU has had its coaches in place and when the two major programs of Florida dont bring back their staff, It’s pretty much a gimme that they would clean-up in florida

I was also impressed by your staff being able to retain guys...

Muschamp did alright considering the hand he was dealt.

And we certainly don’t have the national hype that you folks did over the past few years. But clean up? Let’s be honest. We just pulled the top class according to ESPN and Scout, and the third class according to Rivals. We have a phenomenal class, especially when you consider the fact that we took 15 linemen, who tend to bring in lower ratings.

You can downplay it if that makes you feel better, but it is only a disservice to yourself. You can ask Wilder and Jernigan about clean up if you’d like.

by eslerman on Feb 2, 2011 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

We had the number one class last year...

And we were 8-5. But, if you guys continue to keep getting top 10 classes again than maybe the last game of the year will mean something again, but one great recruiting year is not the end all be all, im sure you know that.

I wholeheartedly agree...

I think for elite programs, elite recruiting is necessary, but never sufficient. FSU has recruited fairly well over the past decade but that translated into very little success.

I thought your 2010 recruiting did as good as you can expect this year, but I certainly don’t follow them like y’all. Elam and Floyd showed some greated flashes for true freshmen, and Trey was very productive.

I am also confident that Jimbo can restore our rivalry. In fact, I’d even venture to say that next years game already means something.

Wilder, Jr.

Is a complete freak… Do you think he will get pissed when his promised role of playing RB is stripped? I think he will likely outgrow that position, and is too talented on the other side of the ball to have him play the RB role in a good, not great, capacity…

by Pecan on Feb 3, 2011 8:51 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe it's wishful thinking...

But I think Wilder could be a great running back. I don’t think we’ll necessarily need him at linebacker. With last year’s addition of Luc and Jones I like our talent there. I also know that while Gran has recruited him as a running back, he has said that he is willing to do whatever it takes to succeed at FSU. I think if given an honest shot at RB, he will be open to switching if things don’t work out. I could be wrong.

ESPN has us in 5th place .....

although the Seminoles are currently ranked #1. On the whole, considering the coaching change going into this season, we are in good shape. I really like the Driskel signing.

It’s a small class. But it packs a punch.

The Once and Future King

by FlaGators on Feb 2, 2011 3:49 PM EST reply actions

The only thing that worries me with this small class is if a bunch of last year’s class leaves early for the draft in a couple years. Then we could really be hurting. Other than that, we got some great guys. Hate that we lost guys like Jernigan to FSU and Maggitt to UT, but at least some of the others we missed out on went to Clemson…? How the heck did they end up with such a great class? Really, why would a 5* go to Clemson? When was the last time they were relevant? Won a conference title? Went to a NC game? I don’t get it.

by Andrew Nordine on Feb 2, 2011 4:14 PM EST reply actions

SC is really starting to take pride in college football.

Recruits like Dunlap always left the state for the bigger schools to win, but as of late players are starting to realize if they stay in state, they can still win with the talent the state produces.

We are still in the running for Junior Pomee too, its a long shot but you never know. Also I like our chances to get the JC dt johnathan Jenkins, he is a beast, and for the OLB Dexter Staley, if we could end with one of these it would be awesome, ecspecially if Pomee comes he is a 6’4 210 pound wr

It was going to be hard to pull top notch

D-Linemen due to the haul we pulled in last year. Even with the discontent, there is talent group of sophomores that may have scared away elite talent.

I agree on the OL sentiment though. That is going to be a concern for the next few years is my opinion. I also agree with the FSU fan above that stated OL brings your “recruiting ranking” down. Most underrated collegiate position.
