Gators Add a Couple More SEC Titles

This past weekend proved to be a fruitful one for the University of Florida.  Both the womens tennis team (as expected) and the mens tennis team (totally unexpected) took home SEC Tournament titles on Sunday.

The top seeded and #2 ranked womens team blanked Tennessee 4-0 to run its season record to 25-1.  It was the 17th SEC Tournament title for the Lady Gators in the event's 24 year history.

We especially like winning the tournament title because it's a three-day event," UF coach Roland Thornqvist said. "We take pride in our fitness and our durability and grit. Winning a three-day event in the heat against a field as tough as the SEC means a lot. It tells you where you are heading into the NCAA Championships.

The Gators now await the NCAA Championship field announcement on May 3rd.

On the men's side, the Gators defeated Kentucky, also won by a 4-0 margin, but the match was closer than the score indicated as all the matches were closely contested.  Sunday marked the 4th SEC Tournament title for the mens squad.  As the 5th seed in the tournament, the Gators had to string together some upsets, and hope to use the momentum gained in the SECS to make a deep run in the NCAAs next month. This was only the 3rd time that the mens and womens tennis teams swept the SEC Tournament titles.

The baseball team kept the perfect day going with a 2-1 win, completing a three game sweep of Alabama in Gainesville.  The wins moved the Gators into a 3 way tie for the SEC lead with Vandy and South Carolina, all at 14-4. The Gators are now 31-10 overall on the season.  The Gators next take on Ole Miss in a 3 game home series next weekend.

Finally, the softball team completed UF's perfect day by defeating Alabama in another nail-biter, 3-2. Kelsey Bruder was the hero for a second straight game as she squibbed a bases loaded 2 out infield single in the bottom of the ninth to win it for the Gators. The win moved the Gators to 15-7 in the conference, 2 games behind leader Tenneseee.  The Gators next face South Carolina for a 3 game series in Columbia next weekend.

Go Gators!
