50 For 50, No. 26: Marcus Roberson Could Be The Next Great Freshman Cornerback For Florida
There are 23 days until Florida's football opener against Florida Atlantic on September 3. Check out Alligator Army's 50 For 50 series for more of our 50 reasons to be excited for Florida football in 2011. We may or may not be kind of behind on this.
As Scott Carter notes in his post on Marcus Roberson's stellar fall camp so far, it's a bit ridiculous to be heaping praise on a freshman before he's even finished a full week of practice. But all indications are that Marcus Roberson could be the next great freshman cornerback for Florida, a very good thing if it comes to pass.
Omar Hunter's quote says a lot, I think:
"He reminds me of a Joe Haden almost," Hunter said. "He even wears that No. 5, so maybe that’s what it is. He comes out and he’s young, and he never lets anything get to him. He always holds his head up and he goes out to work."
Roberson's gotten the standard Will Muschamp praise, too — "Football is very important to him" — and comes with both the size (6'0", 184 pounds) and pedigree (St. Thomas Aquinas) to make some noise in his first season in Gainesville, much as Haden and Janoris Jenkins did before him.

I'm very excited about Marcus
Everything is pointing to him being one hell of a CB.
It's great to be a Florida Gator!
Joe Haden
He was a pretty decent player.

I’d vote for decent.

Haden...
Great run stopper and open field wood layer…
Not so good silky smooth coverage guy…
You may not like what I have to say...but somebody has to say it...
There was a play in the Sugar Bowl that almost perfectly defined Haden.
It was a deep play and he was able to get caught up with the WR and at the last second make a jump and tip the ball away. The problem was the WR had completely beaten him and if the pass had been just 1 inch closer to being on target, it would have been completed. That defined Haden for me. Could always come up big, but had some issues when it came to one-on-one coverage.

I noticed that too
but I value good tackling and play recognition more than INTs. If you can shutdown your side of the field then you are more than worth the play.
Brantley Watch. The mood is tense; I have been on some serious, serious reports but nothing quite like this. I uh... Jon... John is inside right now. I tried to get an interview with him, but they said no, you can't do that he's a live Gator, he will literally rip your face off.
[to the Brantley] Hey, you're making me look stupid. Get out here, Brantley!
Agreed with both...
I think that was what made Jenkins & Haden such good compliments to each other…
JJ is a blanket for an entire side of the field in pass coverage while JH slammed down the other side against the run and short – mid yardage passing…

Any player
who can be 90% of Joe Haden in college I’m taking at CB this year, the fact that he’s a freshmen makes it even more appealing.

I'd even take 80% as long as he can play zone and man.

I feel like Roberson is the forgotten man.
He was a huge addition to the class and could have an immediate impact, but no one seems to be talking about it. Glad he made the list.

Seems to sum up our entire team/season at this point.
