FSU? SEC EAST? Oh Hell No!!

So...Texas A&M is going to vote and surely make an announcement Aug. 22nd. They will be joining the SEC West. Serious talks with FSU on joing the SEC East? They had their opportunity years ago to do so, they said no. I hold the SEC in VERY high regard in NCAA football as I'm sure you all do. As a Gator I say they need the SEC more than we need them. Just leaves a bad taste. Don't like em....don't want em. I just do not see where it would be a benefit to us. GO GATORS !!

Ok I'd like a simple

explanation on why UF fans dont want FSU in the SEC. I get the whole “we don’t like them” but so far thats the majority of reasons I’ve heard.

The way i see it is that.

A. You already play them every year
B. You already compete every year for recruits so that wont change
C. Sure they’ll make more money but its not like FSU is poor.\
D. It makes the SEC better

So if yall could explain to me why exactly you don’t want FSU in the SEC I would greatly appreciate it. Ive been asking every gator i know and none can give me a straight answer.

Thanks

Seems to be split about 50/50. Personally, I’m for it. A lot has to do with the fact that depending on who you ask in 1991, FSU was “scared” to join for fear of them ruining what would become their pretty nice decade.

I've never really convinced that we were "scared" to join the SEC.

During the 80’s and 90’s we played very tough schedules so I have never really bought that, but who knows what all the reasoning was to go to the ACC. But I will say that FSU did try to join the SEC for about 40 years before it joined the ACC.

by Noleforever9399 on Aug 13, 2011 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s just one of the reasons I’ve heard. I’ve never really bought we were scared to play Miami either. But people will talk. All (including those 40 years) will be forgotten. This is a different era, a different time. Things need to happen. FSU joining the SEC (if expansion has to happen) is one of those things.

yep. I live in Tally and have yet to find a single UF fan who

supports the move to the SEC (if it ever happens). Seems like they don’t want to share. Now I can get that. FSU is UF’s biggest rival and you dont want your enemy to share in the spoils (SEC$$$$$$) But you already play them every year. Plus, FSU is about to go nuts on the ACC and will be in a BCS game EVERY year making SEC type money..So why not just add them?
And dont even get me started on USC fans complaining about Clempson. Listen here ‘Cocks after 20 years you are still thought of as a step child. So don’t act like you have any pull.

If FSU joins the SEC they won’t be in a BCS game every year. They’ll be just another team at the top that has some down years, a la Tenn, UGA, ’Bama, Florida, LSU…etc.

I say let them in. Let them see what it is like playing in a real conference. And yes, I’ve always smacked the ACC as a football conference.

right if FSU stays in the ACC they will be..if they jump to the SEC it will be 30x harder

The ACC is a crap football conference. Outside of FSU they have nothing. Miami will never be Miami again. Va Tech is a B+ and thats about it.

Exactly. Though I think Miami could become what they once were, it is getting more difficult for them by the day. They are slipping further and further behind the Gators and FSU.

As Harry once said to Lauren Holly, there is a chance.

But it’s not like FSU would have been a pushover either, we have always had pretty tough schedules and the SEC wasn’t today’s SEC back then either.

Not a pushover at all. But that streak of Top 5’s doesn’t happen, I’ll say only one National Title, and a few 8 win seasons maybe. But no pushover I agree.

The SEC wasn’t what it is today that’s for sure. But it was still a thousand times better than the ACC.

How can anyone say during the 80’s and 90’s the ACC was remotely tough, even now? Yeah sure they played tough out of conference competition but that was the only way they’d get serious consideration.

I believe that FSU has indicated they are willing to join

There was some discussion on various sites about it and then nothing lately. I would be fine with it, the payout is better. I believe some 5 million a year. For FSU a trip to Auburn, Georgia or Alabama sure beats games in Boston in the dead of winter. Not many people are going to travel to those games.

If FSU is going to win the SEC east (again) we may as well get paid for it. The recruiting is pretty much a non issue, FSU gets who they want and UF gets who they want for the most part. It might be disturbing to Alabama, Auburn, Georgia etc.

SEC not scared

I find it hard to believe that the SEC is scared of FSU….please… If this happens FSU finally know what it is to play in a real, competetive conference. Where week in and week out you are playing teams that can beat you on a good day. The ACC is a weak conference. I guess if the Noles want to gauge hoe good they really are…come aboard.

That is what Kentucky and Vandy are for in the East. Ole Miss in the West. Gives teams a minor break.

Freaking Mullen over at Miss State messing with the cycle. The scary thing is, is that he is too damn loyal to just up and leave for greener pastures. It is going to take a heck of a lot to get him out of there.

FSU doesn't deserve the SEC

And SEC doesn’t deserve the ACC.

Why would the SEC want to create a greater burden on competition without increasing it’s market? and what has FSU done lately to show that they merit consideration to join and not increase the market of the SEC significantly?

A&M fills those roles, FSU doesn’t. Why give your rival the advantages you currently enjoy? I don’t want FSU enjoying the revenue sharing that Florida does enjoy.

Why would the SEC want to create a greater burden on competition without increasing it’s market?

Because sometimes, the competition on the field outweights other things.

Which is exactly why in 1992 the SEC added Arkansas and South Carolina and not Florida State and say someone else of that level back then. You don’t want the old guard (Bama, Florida, Tennessee, LSU, Georgia…etc getting upset because you’ve added top teams. But times are changing.

if it comes down to that, I think we can all admit that the East stands in need of another big team to match up with the West a little better. Just not sure if I like FSU being that team.

Yeah, but it goes in cycles though. Remember in the mid-late 90’s to mid-00’s. The East dominated the West. UF, Tennessee and Georgia compared to say LSU in the west. Heck, Miss State got to a SEC Championship Game back then. It goes in cycles.

Yeah, but historically the teams in the West are a better group, with more championships than the East.

But not since expansion. Which is about when the SEC started to rise as the best conference. 11-8 in favor of the East. But the best part is the Gators have 7 of them.

Updated state of mind......

So….Gators, After a few days of thought, radio, etc. What are your current thoughts about FSU. Still in favor? Or better for the Gators and Gator Nation to be looking North to Virginia.

Haha, yeah, I say add them if other conferences are arming themselves. I think that will eventually happen when we get to the superconference standpoint.

I still hold that the SEC doesn't need a power school in football

After looking over all the optioins, My top choice would be UNC and TAMU. North Carolina is that new market, still “south”. After them I’d go with VT, or Virginia. But if I’m between WVU, Duke, Clemson, USF, Louisville, GT, Miami, or FSU, honestly … I’d take Miami.

Talk about making sure the Florida big dogs play each other, that would re-establish the Miami – UF yearly rivalry game, and both could schedule FSU out of conference because FSU is known for that.

obviously the best scenario if going for 16 teams, would be TAMU, Baylor/Houston, and one the pairs of either UNC/Duke or VT/Virginia. Still not including FSU. You could say nay to Baylor/Houston and go with Miami and switch Vandy to the West, but I would still hesitate to add FSU.

I just don’t see how adding power schools (football wise) would benefit the league that has the last 4 national championship schools.

If the SEC runs from FSU

We can at least drop the super conference nonsense and call it the expanded conference. Possibly the Scared of FSU conference.

The debates about expanded footprint are humorous. FSU commands a national audience, we are America’s team and everyone loves the flaming spear and Renegade. If it is all about expanded TV coverage, who are people going to tune into, UGA vs Memphis or NCSU or FSU vs UGA, Bama, Auburn, LSU etc? The answer is obvious. Do we make some money and have a super conference or do we run?

National Audience?

National audience? Maybe you should start trying to fill your own stadium. I can tell you this, through all the years of being a Florida fan…good years and bad, I have always seen it full. I saw your stadium several times with not evven 1/2 full. I would of been ashamed as a fan. And you say they command a National Audience. You have got to be kidding me. Have enough sense to know that outside of Tally…really not that many people give a crap about your team. unless their team is playing them.
