Florida To Hire Brent Pease As Offensive Coordinator On Wednesday, According To Report

Guess what? We have another report saying that Brent Pease will become Florida's offensive coordinator, and all it adds to previous reports is that Pease will be named Florida's offensive coordinator on Wednesday. It comes from ESPN's SEC blogger Edward Aschoff, formerly of the Gainesville Sun, and this is, in all seriousness, the entire extent of that article that isn't just filler.

Boise State offensive coordinator Brent Pease is expected to be named Florida's offensive coordinator Wednesday, a source close to Florida confirmed to ESPN.com Tuesday.

That just adds a date to Scout's Bob Redman's report late Monday night that Pease would be named Florida's next offensive coordinator, and Aschoff has a source, while Redman has sources.

In any case, while we still don't know whether Pease has had or will have a meeting with Alabama's Nick Saban today, as he was reportedly scheduled to do, it looks like Pease is Will Muschamp and Jeremy Foley's man. Now we wait for something official.

I’m still trying to understand the love over this guy. He’s coming from Boise State and Boise State is not a pro-style offense. I thought we were running away from the spread yet we hire a guy that called the plays for it? I hope I’m wrong and this turns out to be a great hire. Also, how will this effect recruiting? This guy hasn’t dealt with 5 star recruits and the things that come with it and obviously isn’t used to how the pro-style works. “yeah but boise rules and they beat georgia in the only game that mattered and they score points on crappy teams”. Okay. Right. Let’s not forget that we were running away from Georgia to then things came apart.

by Gators1 on Jan 10, 2012 6:00 PM EST via mobile reply actions

What do you consider the offense Boise runs? They are definitely a run first, power running team with the ability to pitch the ball all over the yard. It is not strictly a pro offense, but then again not many offenses in college football are. Besides, Muschamp has consistently said that just because Weis is gone doesn’t mean that they are just going to be throwing out the playbook. I take this to mean that Pease will be in charge of coordinating the same offense Florida already has, while of course adding a few wrinkles of his own. But just to clarify, Boise State definitely does not run a spread offense. It is multiple and is built off running the football and taking shots with the play action passing game. This is exactly what Muschamp wants.

by Cali Gators on Jan 10, 2012 6:08 PM EST up reply actions

This.

Exactly. Boise is not a spread offense. Kellen Moore is not running QB draw plays up the gut or read option plays from the shotgun as a standard of their attack. Boise uses a fullback and tightends.

by ECFIVESTER on Jan 10, 2012 6:15 PM EST up reply actions

That offense sure seems spread to me. Oh well. Whatever. Everyone will have there own opinions about the hire. I hope for our Football teams sake that it is a great hire. I find it ironic tho that in a matter of 365 days he can go from only being qualified for a job at IU(who by the way was the only D-1 team in Football that failed to beat another D-1 team) to being qualified for 2 teams that have won Multiple National Titles over the last 6 years.

by Gators1 on Jan 10, 2012 7:07 PM EST up reply actions

They definitely run some multiple wideout sets but

This is not the spread a la Urban Meyer. Usually when people say spread it is shorthand for spread option. If you watch some NFL there are teams running offenses with 3 and 4 wideouts but they are not running spread option offenses.

by Tractorr on Jan 10, 2012 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

I think the difference is the philosophy. The spread is more about 4 and 5 wide receiver sets and using them to create running lanes to run the ball by spreading people out and a quick, up tempo short passing game. A pro offense still has spread formations within it. The difference is the run is used to set up the pass, and formations are not necessarily designed to provide a numbers advantage in the running game. Spread teams don’t ever line up in the I and say “we’re coming right at you, try to stop it.” They put 4 wide receivers on the field and run the ball just enough to keep you honest. Spread option uses the same philosophy as the spread, but adds the option attack element to the offense to make it more difficult to defend, because now with the QB a threat to run your numbers advantage increases. Boise’s offense, even though they may run 3 and 4 wide receiver sets commonly, is not based on this philosophy. Boise State likes to line up and run right at you.

That explains it better. Thanks sir.

by Gators1 on Jan 10, 2012 8:23 PM EST up reply actions

I think by signing day on February 1 we should have a pretty good idea of whether or not this is a good hire. If Diggs, Agholor, and Kent Taylor (committed but reportedly wavering based on who gets hired as offensive coordinator) all sign with Florida, then it shows that at least the recruits like what he’s preaching. Whether or not that can translate to the field next year will remain to be seen.

Tom Brady runs Boise's offense

Aaron Rodgers runs Boise’s offense
Drew Brees runs Boise’s offense

Those are the tippy top of pro-offenses and the best pro teams. They all run a shotgun heavy spread offense. Spread doesn’t mean “Urban Meyer power shotgun option with a TE playing QB”. It means primarily 3+ WR sets. And if you’re looking for balanced offense, Boise is actually far more balanced than the Packers, Patriots, or Saints. They run the ball all the time, and do it out of multiple sets.

I liked the hire when this leaked last week.

Liked it after last night’s leak. Like it now. Presumably I’ll like it as every reporter with any connection at all to UF “confirms” the leak. Maybe one day we’ll get an official release!

Also, I’m highly intrigued by the signage on that bus.

It’s not like they rode this bus back from NOLA. They were carted from the Tuscaloosa Regional Airport back to campus (around 10 miles).

texas fan here...

perusing yalls thoughts on the pease hire. gotta think that there might be a few layers to this hire…ie. before muschamp left for you guys, did he have some input w/ mack wrt harsin? and if so, why did he go w/ daddy lapband instead of another boise style guy?
it’s not the patriots or packers offense btw. it’s not. when harsin was hired we thought we’d be slinging it all over the place too. there’s a ton of reasons as to why that didn’t happen for us, but the part that you guys will care about is that it’s almost all predicated off of a power running game. pease has ties to more throw happy teams (uk/baylor/etc) so i don’t know how much stays and goes into his playbook etc but anyhow.. here’s some stuff that was going around all the longhorn blogs that might help you get acquainted w/ what to expect:

Thanks for the links! That all sounds fantastic to me.

As for what Muschamp may have done regarding the OC before this year, I honestly think that he thought that Weis (because of his college HC record and OC abilities in the NFL) would stick around for a number of years.

As for Pease, I’m happy with it.

Some more tidbits I found...

Pease has a rep for developing wide receivers. While at first this seems obvious because he was a WR coach at Boise prior to being the OC, it is important because this has been the position group that has underachieved the most over the last 3 seasons. He developed the two best WRs in the history of Boise State, and in his time at Kentucky developed a receiver who ended up second on the school’s all-time receiving list. Considering UF’s lack of production at the position, and the big time recruits they are going after, this had to have played a part in the decision. Also, looking at Boise’s offense this year, they were completely balanced. They ran the ball 51% of the time for like 2300 yards or so and 31 rushing touchdowns. Florida scored 31 total offensive touchdowns. He is definitely going to run a pro-style, physical, run first offense that will hopefully be balanced and have big play opportunities in the play-action passing game. Looking forward to it.

The only thing I worry about is that they pretty much had a good thing going and Kellen Moore was an outstanding QB.

How much impact did he really have?

I’m not excited about the hire. I’m not upset about the hire. I just don’t know much about the guy. I’m in wait and see mode.

Nobody really knows how Pease will perform

but after hearing some demonstrably-awful NFL retreads’ names being thrown around, I’m at least excited that Muschamp brought in a guy who spent the past 6 years coaching in an explosive offensive system. With the defense that the Gators return next year, a middle-of-the-pack offense should be enough to win 8 to 10 games.

To me it seems...

…no matter who we hired, someone will be grumpy about it. I am pretty pleased about this hire. I like BSU’s offense. I know a lot of us wanted Kerwin but it just proved to be unrealistic. As long as Pease uses heavy doses of both Gillislee and Debose, I will be happy. Anything is better than Weis’s sadness factory last year.

by GoGators82 on Jan 11, 2012 12:16 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Lest we forget...

What no one seems to mention is that Boise State has, pretty much since it beat Oklahoma in the best bowl game of my lifetime, been a high caliber team that beats at least one big name team each year (Georgia, Virginia Tech, Georgia). And they do it with modest talent (aside from Kellen Moore). Their recruiting pool generally centers around Western Washington, Idaho, and a little bit of California. And look at what they’ve done with that. I can’t say how much Pease had a hand in it, or how much he’s learned from Chris Peterson, but if he’s learned half of Peterson’s skill/knowledge and has the talent of the Gators at his disposal, I think we could see some serious magic.

by Sea-Gator on Jan 11, 2012 4:14 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, Muschamp said at the press conference that Pease is familiar with the panhandle (and north Florida) at least when it comes to recruiting, so maybe when can make a dent into FSU’s dominance in that region (as well as south Alabama).

At this point, I’d expect an offense around No. 50-60 in the country. We were roughly 105th this year. In terms of total offense. If Pease can get us around the 50’s, I’d consider it a success.
