Around SBN: Indy 500: 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing' Set For Sunday

10. FSU: After the underwhelming season the Noles had following all of the hype they had entering 2011, I swore I wouldn't give in and allow myself to rank them in the top 10, so I had them at 11. Yet, here they are. This is something we in the media need to realize: The Noles are your preseason dirty addiction. They are that ex-girlfriend who still can put it together and show up at the other side of the bar and catch your eye. And then you give in, and not long after you feel foolish for it. Anyhow.

Normally, I don't like "sports are like (aspect of relationships)" metaphors, because a) they're absurdly heteronormative and male-dominant, considering that guys make 99% of them and b) they somehow both oversimplify sports and relationships, but Bruce Feldman has Florida State all figured out, I think

Next year, FSU probably won't have the plague of injuries

Healthy, they’re a scary team. Injured, they were still 14 points better than Florida and did it without even bothering to play offense. Hopefully, Florida’s new offense will be an actual offense and not the shittastic fail-buffet that Weis trotted out; otherwise, Florida has at least 1 guaranteed loss on next year’s schedule.

I can't figure out if they're more or less scary now that they lost Jefferson and Lee

the title game seems to point to “more”, especially if Mettenberger is as good as his JUCO rating.

They will be similar – very good defense. They are losing plenty, but they were so deep, that they can fill those holes with experienced players. Plus, Honeybadger is back, and in case Musberger hasn’t told you in the last 15 seconds, he takes what he wants.

I still say that is one of the worst nicknames an athlete can have. And by worst, I mean incredibly dumb. Also, with the way that Musburger was saying, he gave himself that nickname. Which is allowed in most social circles.

You can’t nickname yourself. That just doesn’t work. Same with LeQueen James down in Miami.

Although he did well this season, the media did overhype him

While he had a nose for the ball, he did play opposite the best Corner in the CFB, was the 3rd best db on his team in my opinion, and basically disappeared in the middle of the season.

while true

he did bring extensive value to the table on special teams

overhyped yes...

but its not the fact that he isn’t the best corner on his team… it’s the playmaking/confident mentality that has turned him into a star. He is an awesome returner and can change the game in one touch on either side of the ball. Its like Greg Reid, he was our 3rd best corner this year and will be 2nd next year, but if you were to ask who is the playmaker of this team, I would say him. Yes he is confident (or cocky depends on who you ask), but he makes the big plays. Nobody highlights the mistakes, its all about the big play. Its like in golf chicks dig the long ball, not the consistent guy. I could argue that Terrell Buckley was better than Deion Sanders, but who do people remember more? You could argue the same about Tebow. The playmakers of that team were Percy Harvin, and that OLine. But who gets all the credit and who will people remember most?

Yeah, I’m thinking they’ll be as good. But I also think they’ll lose a game they shouldn’t. They are overdue for one of those.

Cmonnnn mannn...lol

I would say between us & LSU we will be the better team, as we return more on Defense and Offense with all 16 d-lineman returning and the only notable losses on Defense being Nigel Bradham, Mike Harris, and Terrance Parks

by az5950 on Jan 17, 2012 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

That's probably a stretch

we all know what EJ is. That is a pretty decent QB. LSU didn’t have that last year and eviscerated every team that wasn’t Alabama. If Mettenberger is worse than Jefferson/Lee (seriously that combo sounds like a Confederate general), then FSU has a chance of being better than LSU. If he’s as good or better than LSU’s QB last year? No way. Not ever. That team is going to the championship again, and the only team that can stop them is USC.

Depends, I like they're D-Line recruiting and the way they've developed players the past few years

But honestly that D was a little undersized, not sure how they’ve recruited linebackers, but I do think their D will be solid, next year, but I think the loss of Reuben Randle will hurt a little more than people think….for us, we return 19 out of 22 of our 2 deep on defense, and really have no significant losses on Offense, Bert Reed was decent but honestly will be replaced by more talented players, O-Line is our biggest question mark, but I doubt we will have injury luck as bad as this past season

The LSU offense was schizophrenic at best

because they basically ran two offenses this year. Against out matched opponents, they put up decent numbers, but even those numbers were sort of skewed by takeaways and field position. By necessity, LSU will have to be more balanced next year. You’re returning guys on offense, but they aren’t very good guys on offense. Honestly, I think you guys drop it to WF’nVU in week 2.

At least you likely won’t give up 70 though.

EJ's good, Freeman shows a lot of potential, the Greens are good

the line is still young, the rest of the WRs are above average. It really depends on the O-line and whether or not Freeman is actually a good RB. If they can’t get FSU up near 150+ yds/game on the ground as a team, then the Noles are going to run into the same problems that they faced this year. EJ isn’t good enough to win the ACC without a ground game.

I think WVU is actually going to be pretty good next regardless

But I see it more as FSU dropping a game to a team they shouldn’t, which is just the way things kind of go.

by Charles UF on Jan 18, 2012 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

I think WVU will be good next year also

As I see them improving within Holgerson’s scheme in the 2nd year…but for us it all depends on how the ACC does the schedule, as it didn’t really benefit us last year

by az5950 on Jan 18, 2012 7:12 PM EST up reply actions

I don't see them putting 70 up on FSU.

But those early games are crapshoots. You never know how teams are going to come back from the long off season.

haha

well we might be good again someday, I’ve still got hope.
