Chomping At Bits: Billy Donovan, Halftime And Missouri's Artificial Turf

Billy Donovan lights fire at halftime: Among other things, there was this: "We’re all privileged in that locker room — coaches, players, strength coaches, trainers — to have an opportunity to be at this school representing the school, wearing that jersey. There is something that goes along with wearing that jersey." (Jason Lieser, Gator Bytes/The Palm Beach Post)
Will Yeguete out indefinitely: Yeguete suffered a broken foot with about 11 minutes left in the game last night against the Auburn Tigers. Yeah, this isn't good folks. (Adam Silverstein, Only Gators)
Missouri to keep artificial turf: Instead of replacing their artificial turf with real grass, they are just replacing the fake stuff with newer fake stuff. In case Missouri doesn't know already, we don't roll with the fake stuff here in the SEC. Also, it's hard to respect a football team that plays in a dome or on artificial turf. At least for me anyway. It's an air-flow problem you say? Fix that why don't you. You've got the money now! (T. Kyle King, Dawg Sports)
James Wilson seeks sixth year: The guard's career has been plagued by injuries. Hopefully from an experience standpoint, he is successful in his request. (Rachel George, Swamp Things/Orlando Sentinel)
Gators rally to beat Bethune-Cookman: I'm sure our resident baseball expert BKGator will have the recap up shortly. (Franz Beard, 247 Sports)

Recap of last night’s thrilling baseball game against Bethune-Cookman. Little known fact. Bethune-Cookman has a dash in it and they are proud of it.

Yes! I do wish that happened more often in my life.
Proud of a dash? Hey, whatever works.

Mizzou's plastic field
Big Meh. The SEC Championship Game is played on the exact same surface (assuming that they are installing field turf to replace some older style of plastic). Plus, any conference which allows a basketball court like Vandy’s to be used can’t really be all that concerned over the playing surface its teams have to endure.
I was completely deflated to learn of Yeguete’s injury though. I have felt for quite some time now that he is THE most valuable player on the team (literally most valuable, not best player). In case you haven’t noticed, the Gators have a size problem, and with Young’s recent struggles on the glass (5 boards per game in conference play this season – less than that over the past few weeks) we are going to get massacred underneath. And if the threes aren’t falling, there aren’t many teams we can beat. Period. Who is going to fill the rebounding void? Murphy? Larson?
I’m afraid we’re in trouble.
In all kinds of weather...
You play in an outdoor stadium, you play on real grass. It’s very simple. As for the Georgia Dome, that place is a ridiculous concrete jungle that doesn’t even sell peanuts.
Editor at Alligator Army.
you just don’t know where to look! The Dome has a specialty nut kiosk where they sell candied pecans (in addition to peanuts).
In all kinds of weather...
I’ve walked all through that Stadium at least ten times, including the inside offices before the 2008 SEC Championship Game in search of peanuts. I’ve also never seen anybody eating them either.
Where is it located, because I don’t believe it.

I don't see how you can say Yeguete is more valuable than PY.

Young is hurt
Yeguette basically allows Donovan and co. to run one of the best press defenses in the nation. without him, we are too thin, with and injured Patric, and a underwhelming Murphy. Cody Larson, if you ever wanted to establish any type of basketball success past high school, now is that time!

Young
Beal averages more rebounds per game than PY (as does Yeguete, Young is actually third on the team in boards, which is embarrassing with that build). And Young has been extremely pedestrian lately. That terrible fumble on the perfect alley-oop pass last night looked very Werner-esque.
In all kinds of weather...
Yeah but
the guy has been hurt for the past two months. You can’t logically expect him to produce with much higher with the type of injury he has. He needs rest in order to overcome it. and that ain’t happening anytime soon.
His injury causes him to rely too much on his upper body. This leads him to foul at a higher rate, and rebound at a lower rate because he doesn’t have the explosion he is used to or the stability from his lower body due to the tendinitis.
Not trying to make excuses for Big Pat, but I am being realistic. You can basically almost pinpoint exactly when his flair up started and how it actually got worse by looking at his game by game production.

I've been trying to figure out what Donovan's going to do without Will
I think there’s a couple of safe bets.
1.) Boynton and Beal will continue to play huge minutes. Since the loss at Kentucky, Boynton has played 141 of 160 possible minutes. He has 10 games this season where he played 30 minutes or fewer, 5 of those coming in SEC play. He has played at least 33 minutes in each of the four games since the loss to Kentucky, including 35 against Tennessee and 39 against Alabama. Beal has been the team’s iron man all season, averaging 34 minutes/game. In the last four games, he’s played 148 of 160 possible minutes and played at least 36 minutes in each game. Neither has shown any adverse signs from the increased minutes, in fact, both appear to be peaking (Boynton at everything, Beal defensively). Still, those minutes are adding up very quickly, and the schedule will compress for the SEC tourney before opening back up for the NCAAs.
2.) The 4-guard set is going to be featured as the primary reserve set. Young and Murphy both have serious foul issues, and on top of that, Young isn’t healthy. Prather and Larson are not reliable reserves, so Donovan can only turn to Rosario and Wilbekin. Wilbekin will probably get the majority of the reserve minutes until Rosario is effective again, but as long as Rosario is able to dress out, I think he’s going to be the second man off the bench, regardless of the situation. To make things even weirder, troubling interior teams like Kentucky may force Florida to play Prather at center along with the four guards giving Florida essentially a 5 guard set (every time Larson has played for more than 10 minutes, he’s committed at least 3 fouls). Expect that lineup to post a horrifying +- against any team with a player over 6’7".

Larson might be the worst player I have seen at Florida
I mean that in the nicest way possible, but he gets severely abused any time he is on the court.

I’d have to think about it for a bit. In terms of hype, say since 1990, Teddy Dupay comes to mind. And to think he’s a Cape guy.

He doesn't even have a cool nick name
like Thunder Dan Werner

Makes me sad to vote for a Lee County guy, but the two (head, play) go hand-in-hand don’t they?
Editor at Alligator Army.
every big on the team loves fouling more than rebounding
it’s going to get messy, if Davis bullies down low early.

Just a note re mizzou's turf
take a look at this article and notice the three injuries listed in one game played at missouri. Their playing surface was appalling last year, so I hope they are actually changing to something better. Even the commentators that game were ripping on missouri pretty hard. Tough to argue with 2 season ending injuries within minutes of each other. If you watch the replay on either it is very apparent.

Hmmm. Well, hopefully their new fake stuff will be better than that. Thanks for the link. That was a pretty bad field.
