Chomping At Bits: Florida-Kentucky Postmortem Edition

Chomping At Bits comes stocked with the best Florida Gators links and news we can find. Got a link we should check out? Email us at AlligatorArmy@gmail.com, subject line CAB.

Here is your depressing summation of where Florida's basketball team is: You ready? I don't think you're ready. (Rob Dauster, Ballin' is a Habit)

Look, I know that the Gators are ranked in the top ten and I know that the consensus is that this group is the second-best team in the SEC. But the gap between the first and the second teams in that league is fairly large, and the gap between where Florida truly ranked and the No. 7 spot is just as big. The Gators are a streaky team that stinks on the road, where they have lost to Rutgers and Tennessee already this season.

Erving Walker bottoms out: It was always probably going to be a bad night for Erv, but his worst since his freshman year? (Rachel George, Swamp Things | Orlando Sentinel)

Snarky AP recap is snarky: Okay, it's mostly the headline. (Colin Fly, Associated Press | The Florida Times-Union)

Bradley Beal's future undecided: Written before Tuesday night, of course. (Kevin Brockway, Hoops Scoop | Gainesville Sun)

Florida tennis sweeps USF: So there was that on Tuesday. (GatorZone)

Jeff Demps still good at sprinting: Have you ever considered how fast Jeff Demps really is? Time yourself writing a sentence sometime, or time the chorus of your favorite song. (GatorZone)

As always: Talk about any and all of this and/or anything else you have to say in the comments. Need more Alligator Army in your life? Another Uni Story for Gator Football

GatorSports is reporting it http://forum.gatorsports.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=18290

Motion Pro-Style Offense, featuring multiple TEs and Multiple WRs ... yep that's orange and blue football, via Brent Pease and Chris Petersen.

I hope not. Some of those comments say it is fake.

Yeah I don’t know how I feel about it either. If I take anything away from the info it is that we will be seeing Florida in some sort of Pro-Combat uni next season. Hopefully it’s by the designers of UGA’s last year. Those were dog gone awful. Boise State’s weren’t too bad … Stay Classy Florida, but that doesn’t mean wear those 60’s throw backs like you did in 2006. Don’t understand how people like those, they look old and depressing.

“…dog gone awful.”

Love it and agree.

meant

not by the designer’s of UGA’s

2006 throwbacks

were awesome. We played out of our minds in them too.

1 game

does not a pattern make

Bet if we wore them last year against Bama Brantley falls dead instead of just getting hurt.

That’s the beauty of the uniform – you gotta know when to wear it. We wore it for a huge game in 2006 to mark a significant event and prevailed, eventually winning a title.

Special uniforms are cheapened when you go to the well too often. See Georgia and their “blackout” unis!

As for me, I would be fine wearing a special uniform once every 100 years, but I kow that younger folks like that sort of thing and I’m an old fart when it comes to traditions.

by skigator93 on Feb 9, 2012 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

Well

then I guess we’ll see those unis again in either 2031, 2056, 2081, or 3006 … if they use them as 25 year anniversary uniforms. That wouldn’t bother me at all. I just don’t like em. The blue is too dark (very close to navy), and the orange is too deep (too close to Texas or a red) making them look old and bland. I like the crisp royal blue and the sunkist orange. They are bright enough but not overtly.

But then again I don’t see the regular uniforms changing. Which is what I think most of us here really care about. No one wants to lose the regular unis we have all come to know and love over the past 20 plus years.

agree with that

I am good with the Sunkist unis. I also hate the orange jerseys but I can deal with those on a rare occasion. I kind of wish we would be more like Bama and never change our uniform. I know a lot of the recruits like new threads, but It doesn’t seem to stop Bama from getting the top recruits.

When was

The last time we changed our uniforms? You realize this is a hoax, right? We did Pro Combat once for the FSU game, and those Orange/Blue thingies once when Leak was here. Besides that, it’s been the same for decades.

That's not Gator Sports reporting it.

It’s someone taking a tweet and passing it on.

I’m not gonna believe it.

Zach

writes for Gators Sports. He covers the recruiting side. And he is basically reporting it by using the medium of his paper to introduce the subject. Rather than responding to someone’s rumor he is responsible for giving it life.

I get what your saying

it just seems to indicate that with the lack of an official release from Nike, we have the indications that Florida will be part of the Pro-Combat circuit for 2012.

All of the doomspeak is ridiculous

yeah, Florida’s not beating Kentucky anywhere but the O’Dome, and that’s only an outside shot at this point (HA! GET IT? BECAUSE FLORIDA RELIES ON THE 3!). They’re just one team, though. And Florida’s road woes are overblown. Yes, the Gators are like UK last year, and they can’t win often on the road. But, unless there’s been a drastic change this year, the NCAA Tournament is played exclusively at neutral locations, and Florida isn’t bad at those. Florida doesn’t have to go into Rupp to get to the Final Four. They probably won’t have to go through Kentucky, either. I don’t see another team handling the Gators like that, even if Erving Walker goes cold enough to approach absolute zero again.

Yeah

I wouldn’t be down about the UK loss. UK looks like a Championship team with the frontcourt depth of Gilchrist, Davis, and Jones. Any team will hard pressed to beat them, especially as the season wears on.

Totally agree here with both points. Kentucky has won 49 in a row at home for a reason. That team is stacked with NBA talent, and frankly is one of the few teams in the country that has the size to give Florida the problems that they gave them. Kentucky is a national title caliber team. Florida, on the other hand, made a run to the elite 8 last year and has most of the key pieces back to make another run again. As long as they can learn from last night’s experience, they still have the ability to make a final four run. Last night they pressed a little too hard and got sloppy, and missed a bunch of fairly open looks that fed the UK fast break. And not too many teams have a guy that can block just about any shot like UK does. It would have been nice for them to keep it closer, but this game isn’t some doomsday signal. Let’s get ‘em at the O’Dome!

we lost 2 guys who could rebound from that team. We added Beal, who is a terriffic rebounder for a guard, but we lost a 6’10" and a 6’9" forward….if our 3s aren’t falling, this is an early tourney exit team because we have nowhere else to go.

No

Unless every team has 6 NBA draft picks and a freak shot-blocker like Anthony Davis, I THINK we’ll be fine. Our guards can drive to the basket just fine, as long as there aren’t huge freaks roaming the paint waiting to swat our shots. Every team isn’t chock full of length like UK is. Come back from the ledge.

by Obi_Ugochukwu on Feb 9, 2012 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

Bad loss...

But let’s put it in perspective. UK isn’t going to shoot 60% from three every game, and Florida isn’t going to shoot 25%, missing several WIDE. OPEN. looks from three. The margin is what it is, and the scores are what they are. I’m not going to what if anything, but I’ll just say that moving on, this game is great for teaching and experience. Having played the No. 1, 2, and 3 teams on the road in the same season can only help in terms of making everything else seem like a complete cakewalk. Our road woes are MASSIVELY overblown, for those same reasons. No other team in the country has beaten 3 of the teams we lost to on the road at home in years.

Overall, I drew a few positives from the game. I liked Billy trying to get Pat going by having him take it to Davis. He finished the game with 4 fouls. Then, there’s our ever-improving defense. We drew like 3 or 4 charges, and we did a good job of keeping the dribble penetration out of the paint. We were out of position on several lobs, though, so keeping track of your man is something we’ll have to work on.

All the “experts” will blabber on about Florida being exposed and whatnot, but Baylor got creamed by Kansas at the Phog by 18, and North Carolina got plastered by 33 by an FSU team that we beat by 18, and they’re both still considered contenders, so every team has its bad games.

I really think this will light a fire under this team’s ass that will push them not to lose another game until the season finale with UK. I still see this as an Elite Eight team.

We should get on Cheap Seats or something weekly, because apparently we’re the only ones with a level head about Florida basketball.
