Florida basketball recruiting: 2014 forward Devin Robinson commits to Gators

Florida gets a commitment from a player who had been seen as an Indiana lean — and who compares to Corey Brewer.

Florida secured a third big-time commitment for its basketball recruiting class of 2014 on Wednesday, as Devin Robinson of Christchurch School in Virginia committed to Billy Donovan's Gators at a ceremony at his school.

Robinson had also been considering Indiana, Oklahoma State, and Notre Dame, and was considered an Indiana lean after eliminating another favorite, Connecticut. But Donovan and Florida made a late charge at Robinson, getting his last official visit over the weekend of October 11, and clearly did enough on that visit to sway him, as a slew of predictions that Robinson would commit to Florida were made on his 247Sports Crystal Ball over the last two weeks. Indiana didn't even make the "shirt on the table" portion of Robinson's ceremony, apparently.

As for Robinson's talents, you need to watch a couple of highlight videos to get a sense of just how much the 6'8", 180-pound forward plays like former Florida great Corey Brewer.

Robinson is long and fluid, and has decent hops — you don't need much more than decent hops at 6'8" — a good shot, and good handles. He's the kind of slithery wing/forward hybrid player that Donovan's had so much success with in his career, whether that player's Mike Miller, Brewer, or Chandler Parsons, and he's a great fit for Donovan's ball screen offense.

As you can also see from the videos, Robinson's still painfully skinny, and will probably need weight training to be a factor at Florida. But with several good wing/forward players ahead of him, it's possible not much will be required of Robinson in 2014-15.

247Sports rates Robinson as the No. 21 prospect in the 2014 class according to its industry-averaging 247Composite rating, and a four-star player ranked No. 29 player overall according to its own scouts. Rivals has him as the No. 20 player in the country, and a five-star prospect; Scout and ESPN rate him as a four-star player.

Robinson joins Chris Chiozza and Brandone Francis to form the nucleus of a very impressive 2014 recruiting class that might expand as Donovan chases down even bigger fish. Florida's not in it for many household names beyond Justise Winslow, but Donovan's connection to Winslow thanks to his work for USA Basketball gives Florida an in on him, and the Gators have two killer recruiters doing work on the trail in Rashon Burno — partially responsible for Robinson's commitment — and Matt McCall.

With young, smart recruiters on staff, Donovan's gravitas, record, and personability as trump cards, and Florida making the Elite Eight its base camp in the NCAA Tournament, there's a lot to like about the Florida basketball program right now — and that's why top-flight recruits keep committing.
