Florida Gators injury report: 21 scholarship players have missed games due to injury

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Florida's injuries are staggering, but they don't count when you lose to Georgia Southern if Georgia Southern is also hurt, or something.

Florida's injury report for the 2013 season is longer than most of the readings I did as an undergrad.

The new nigh unbelievable number to know is 26, the new number of scholarship players who have missed snaps due to injury, thanks to Jonathan Bullard missing last Saturday's loss to Georgia Southern with a knee injury. The more important one is 21, the number of players who have missed at least one full game with injury.

Here are charts to make you weep:

Season-Ending Injuries

Player Position Injury Date
Andre Debose WR Torn ACL August 6
Matt Rolin OLB Torn ACL August 8
Chaz Green RT Torn labrum ~August 26
Nick Washington CB Shoulder September 11
Jeff Driskel QB Broken fibula September 21
Dominique Easley DT Torn ACL, meniscus September 24
Matt Jones RB Torn meniscus October 12
Jeremi Powell LB Torn ACL October 19
Tyler Moore OT Broken right arm November 5
Antonio Morrison LB Torn meniscus November 9

On the bright side, I'm not going to count injuries suffered by Michael Taylor and Alex Anzalone last week as season-ending injuries just yet — even though they were, with both players out for Florida State — and I won't be reclassifying D.J. Humphries's injury as a season-ending injury unless he misses the Florida State game. 10 season-ending injuries is depressing enough.

At least 26 Florida players have missed snaps this fall thanks to injury, including 19 offensive and defensive starters. Arguably, that number should really be 20: Morrison and Taylor both being out at middle linebacker elevated Anzalone to the first string for Georgia Southern ... and then Anzalone promptly got hurt.

Bullard is the only defensive end to miss a game, so yay for that, but Florida's linebacking corps came from well back in the pack to become the team's most injured unit this year. Florida has lost three linebackers since its loss to Vanderbilt just three weeks ago, and now has four (presumably) fully healthy scholarship linebackers, with Will Muschamp saying that Daniel McMillian, who has been playing on special teams, has been dealing with a thumb issue that has prevented him from playing linebacker.

And of the four — Neiron Ball, Jarrad Davis, Darrin Kitchens, and Ronald Powell — Davis is the only one who hasn't suffered a serious injury or medical issue in his Florida career. The easy joke is that it's probably partly because he is a true freshman, and the voodoo curse takes time to work, but it's nice that someone's escaped misfortune in that cursed crew — certainly, no one would wish Ball's life-threatening condition, or Kitchens's terrifying helmet-to-helmet hit and resulting extended time down on the field, on anyone.

Kitchens is also perhaps not actually fully healthy, given those "chronic shoulder problems," which helps explain Florida's official roster now listing Gideon Ajagbe, who has played fullback all year after playing as a linebacker in 2012, at linebacker.

Florida has had five of its 12 (Florida lists three wide receivers and a tight end) likely offensive starters (Driskel, Green, Halapio, Humphries, Jones) miss full games this fall due to injury, not including Debose. Five of Florida's 11 likely defensive starters (Bullard, Easley, Morrison, Powell, and Roberson) have also missed full games due to injury; Morrison was always Florida's projected starting middle linebacker, even during his suspension from the team.

Florida has also had 21 scholarship players miss at least one full game due to injury this fall. That number will swell to 23 after the Florida State game that Anzalone and Taylor will both miss.
