Elsewhere on National Signing Day, a bunch of five-star prospects Florida was never getting decided not to go to Florida.
It wasn't a surprise when defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche, the No. 1 overall prospect in the ESPNU 300, Mississippi over Florida and LSU in an early morning announcement. But it did set a fantastic day for Ole Miss in motion.
In addition to Nkemdiche, fellow ESPNU 300 member Laremy Tunsil, from just 45 minutes up the road from Florida in Lake City, picked Mississippi, opting for Oxford over Georgia and Alabama. Florida was only briefly a factor in Tunsil's recruitment, as he seemed bound for somewhere other than the Sunshine State from early on.
Another five-star, defensive tackle Montravius Adams, picked Auburn over Clemson.
Florida received official visits from both Nkemdiche and Adams, but was not considered a threat to land either player.
These were the three highlights of the morning action, but here is the entire list of players in the ESPNU 300 who have committed this morning, in chronological order of their announcements.
- Robert Nkemdiche (Loganville, GA): Mississippi (over Florida, LSU).
- Carl Lawson (Alpharetta, GA): affirms commitment to Auburn.
- Matthew Thomas (Miami, FL): Florida State (over Miami, Georgia, USC, Alabama).
- Denver Kirkland (Miami, FL): Arkansas (over Florida State).
- Laremy Tunsil (Lake City, FL): Mississippi (over Alabama and Georgia).
- Montravius Adams (Vienna, GA): Auburn (over Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Clemson)
As of the Nkemdiche signing, at 7:35am, the Gators still held the nation's No. 1 overall class according to ESPN, and assuming we don't get any nasty signing day surprises, it's a decent bet the Gators will stay at No. 1. Alabama is likely to make a run at the Gators, but the Tide may need to sign defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes to top them.
Of course, the only way we'll really know how high our recruiting class is worth is to come back four years from now and see how we did, but this is still a positive sign to see all the potential Will Muschamp and co. get to work with.
I'll be back at noon with another batch of commitments.
