Florida football recruiting, Weekend Wrap: Kurt Roper to the rescue on offense?

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Since Kurt Roper was hired as the Gators' new offensive coordinator, Florida's changed course on the recruting trail, at least when it comes to offense.

It was an eventful week on the recruiting trail for the Florida Gators. Then again, with National Signing Day just 15 days away, they all should be eventful weeks.

Kicking off the good news for Gator fans is the recently announced flip of Thomas Holley from Penn State to Florida. Holley, a four-star defensive tackle from Brooklyn, made his flip last Wednesday, after speculation that his pledge to Penn State was in jeopardy following Bill O'Brien's departure. Holley joins Khairi Clark as the second defensive tackle in the 2014 class.

Booker T. Washington quarterback and Florida State commit Treon Harris took an official visit to Gainesville over the weekend after an in-home visit last Thursday. Harris' dual-threat abilities at quarterback are well-documented, after he led Booker T. Washington to the mythical high school national championship this year, and Kurt Roper hasn't shied away from informing the four-star that he's one of Florida's top recruiting priorities. Harris, who says he's "100 percent" to Florida State ($), but will make his final decision on National Signing Day, which may sound familiar, will ultimately make his decision on signing day after taking his remaining official visits to Auburn and Miami.

Besides Harris, there was a plethora of Florida targets visiting on campus over the weekend, including new commit Deiondre Porter, three-star American Heritage athlete Isaiah McKenzie, current UF commits Clark, J.C. Jackson, and Moral Stephens, Miramar offensive lineman Yodny Cajuste and four-star running back Derrell Scott.

McKenzie has been looking into Florida since learning of the Roper hire. McKenzie was told that he would be used in a Solomon Patton-type role as an effective receiver in open space.

J.C. Jackson's recruitment has been a metaphoric roller coaster, to say the least. Jackson, who was committed to Florida State before decommitting and pledging to Florida, has been considering Florida State, Miami and Florida for some time, but has remained committed to the Gators since his pledge in June. Jackson was head over heels for the Gators after his official visit, but don't expect his recruitment to end until pen meets paper on signing day.

Having only been playing football one year, Cajuste is a raw talent on the line, but shows great upside. At 6'6" and 270 pounds, Cajuste has the frame to add weight and can provide long-term depth on a historically shallow offensive line.

Will Muschamp paid Jacksonville's Trinity Christian a visit during the contact period, hitting the trail to do work for a host of 2015 targets at the school, including Kendrick Norton, Kevin Tolliver and Ben Edwards. In addition, notable players to receive visits from members of the Florida staff include 2015 five-star quarterback Torrance Gibson and linebacker Jeffrey Holland.

Despite the recent wave of good news, not everything has gone well for Gator Nation. As expected, Ermon Lane made his decommitment from the Gators official. Lane, one of the nation's top wide receiver prospects, had been committed to Florida since September, but had a change of heart after Florida's 4-8 season. The strong feeling is that Lane will follow close friend Dalvin Cook to Florida State come signing day.
