Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Alligator Army Notebook: March 3rd

- I refuse to believe that the basketball team is a bad team. Not bad in the sense that they shoot poorly or can't play defense. Bad in the sense that they cannot play consistently at a high level. Mississippi State is a good team, but there is no way Florida should ever shoot 36% against anyone. It wasn't just terrible shooting; there was carelessness to some of the play in the offensive end. We are beyond the point of saying, "Oh, they're young. They don't know any better." I remember being told as a kid to not leave my feet unless I'm shooting. So why did Calathes, at least three times, drive to the rim and then jump but made a pass instead? Or how about the numerous blown or blocked layups the Gators had? I actually asked my friend during the game if anyone on UF knew how to dunk. When you see those types of plays still happening in game 29, it makes you wonder how much these guys are actually learning. At least with Florida's other youthful group, the secondary and defensive line, you'd see them growing up (Joe Haden, Mike Pouncey, Major Wright).

- I think if UF can split the last two games and win the first round of the SEC, they make the tournament. That would make them 23-10 and 9-7 (regular season) in the league. They get the boost of being defending champions, despite playing some terrible opponents. Although, I'll get worried if UF splits with Kentucky and they become more attractive than UF.

- Clemente Figueroa salvaged the final game of baseball's three game set in Miami with his grand slam in the 8th, defeating the Hurricanes 6-2. The day started with a strong outing by Tampa Tommy Toledo, who allowed two runs on four hits in five innings. He was a little wild with three walks over two strikeouts, but he held tight. I really hope that Toledo ends up being the Friday night starter when SEC play begins because for his second start this season, Kyle Mullaney was smacked around on Friday. Sure he was only credited with two earned runs, but in the disastrous second inning, Mullaney allowed three hits, including a home run and a double as da U scored four runs. Had an error not been committed on the first batter, all the runs in the second would have been earned. Mullaney needs to show he can pitch at least five strong innings or it is back to the bullpen for him.

- The Gator Softball team is showing flashes of greatness. After their first loss Wednesday to start a six game swing through California, the Gators rallied and won five straight at the Worth Invitational. The true measure of a team is not how many games do they win, but what do they do with their backs to the wall. We found out yesterday against Stanford how the softball team would do. Down 3-1 in the bottom of the 7th, UF's first two batters reached and were driven in on Mary Ratliff's walk off three-run homer. The 4-3 win makes the Gators 24-1. After the Gators play UCF on Thursday, they begin SEC play Saturday against Ole Miss.

Well, I have to admit...
...I was wrong.  Rocco would play better offence than half the team.

Not a Good Sign
This past Sunday afternoon, a bunch of my friends and I headed up to the UVS sand volleyball courts next to Southwest Rec.  All six of the courts were full, so we had to wait.  And do you want to guess who was on court one?  None other than Nick Calathes and Chandler Parsons.  They were having a ball, playing 3v3 against a team of girls.  They were laughing, jumping, and giggling with the girls.

We, meanwhile, were still disgusted with the way the basketball team had played the evening before.  Why were two of our star players having a joyfest on the sand volleyball courts instead of reviewing film, or even watching the Tennessee game.

Not only that, but Nick Calathes has the most homosexual tattoos.  He has one across his back, and another on his chest.  They make him look like straight trash.  Either way, get these kids on a chain, Billy.

hmm
his tattoos are homosexual?  i assume that's what you mean, since most people stopped using "gay" as an insult around middle school...

my thoughts
I think this team does not win another game. I think we drop the last 2, make a one and done appearance in the SEC and then drop the opener in the NIT.  We have not played well at all in the past month - UGA game excepted, but UGA is terrible.

Also, I am not sure which Citrus Bowl game you watched, but none of those younger guys you mentioned from the gridiron looked like they had a full season of experience under their belts either.

Regarding TB Cook's comments above....just because they play basketball at UF, does not mean that they need to spend every waking hour studying film and preparing for their next game. I think given the choice of either playing volleyball with some hot UF coeds or sitting in a film room with Werner and Adam Allen watching myself and my teammates miss layups and chuck terrbile outside shots all day - we would have all made the same decision.  They are still students and deserve to enjoy the fun things at UF as well. Let's face it - it's not like they are preparing to make any deep tournament runs this season.

Go softball team - the womens teams at UF traditionally excel on the national level more than the mens teams.

Real Concern
My main concern was that they were doing something that makes them vulnerable to injury.  Coming down in that sand the wrong way would easily twist an ankle.  I have no problem with these kids doing this stuff in the offseason, but when you are approaching the post-season, you need to make decisions that are best for the team.  I would prefer that they wait a couple weeks before they hit the sand courts, when a twisted ankle has plenty of time to get better before the next season.

not really what you implied
You stated  "Why were two of our star players having a joyfest on the sand volleyball courts instead of reviewing film, or even watching the Tennessee game."

not-

"Why were these guys out there risking injury and potentially hurting their teammates?"

It wasn't exactly motorcycle jumping.  When I was in school, a basketball team made up of football players used to dominate the summer B intermurals. I actually had to try to cover Willie Jackson at point guard. It was rough. This was just weeks before the football season started.

Athletes are going to play sports and college students are going to have fun. I am sure they put plenty of hours in at the gym.
