The Coaching Carousel Continues to Spin

A couple quick hits about coaching vacancies at major schools:

  • Rich Rodriguez has agree in principle to become the new coach at the University of Alabama according to the Birmingham News (hat-tip to Nico from Roll Bama Roll for keeping us updated).  Rodriguez (if true) will be the second coach in three years to bring a spread-option type offense to the Southeastern Conference alongside Gators coach Urban Meyer.  Very interesting.
  • The Miami Hurricanes have hired from within to replace fired coach Larry Coker, hiring DC Randy Shannon as their new head coach.  Shannon played at Miami, winning the national title in '87, and coached the Miami defense to very impressive numbers this season.  The 'Canes defense ranked 5th in the nation in total defense this season, despite numerous injuries.  I really think that the Hurricanes made the right move here.
