Joe Cohen, longtime friend and HS teammate of Reggie Nelson, has said that the Junior safety is turning pro, according to Florida Today:
Nelson, a consensus All-American, was seriously considering leaving college anyway. His ultimate decision may have been impacted by the death of his mother, Mary Lakes, before the Gators' 41-14 win over Ohio State for the national title.
As I've posted before, this seemed to be a very probable outcome when it came to Reggie Nelson. His stock may never be higher and he has two younger siblings that could really benefit from a nice pro payday. When it comes to family and personal life, you gotta do what you gotta do.
Whether or not he turns pro, it's been a fun two years watching Nelson play the safety position. We will obviously miss him on the football field, but when it comes to this decision I'd say Gator fans support him either way.
He has until Monday to make his decision, but tomorrow may be the day we get an official announcement from Reggie. If he does leave early, that will make 3 Junior defensive players making the jump - Jarvis Moss, Reggie Nelson and Ryan Smith - 3 guys that were key factors in the National Championship run and 3 guys who will be hard to replace.
