Just Short...

Man, a 197.225 score and still a third-place finish.

The Gators fell just short of achieving the National Championship in gymnastics this evening, as the Georgia Bulldogs captured their third-straight national title -- scoring a 197.850.

Not many teams could have beaten the 'Dogs this evening.  They were just locked in.

Congrats to the Gym 'Dogs.  They totally deserved the crown after an almost perfect performance in Salt Lake City this evening.  While it's thoroughly disappointing seeing our girls not take the championship after an undefeated season, I am still very proud of their efforts.

Congrats to the Lady Gators and head coach Rhonda Faehn on an amazing campaign!

Update [2007-4-28 14:23:7 by Mark]: Here are the official stories from Gatorzone and the Gainesville Sun.

I think Coach Faehn summed the whole evening up perfectly.

"I have to hand it to Georgia; they had an unbelievable night. They were on fire and deserved to win," Faehn said. "We made mistakes that you just can’t do when you are challenging for a national title. I think we did really well on vault and decent on beam, especially since we started on that event. Tonight we just made some mistakes in areas like floor and bars that just hurt our chances the most. It was hard because we were so consistent all season long.

"But I’m just so proud of these athletes for the season that we’ve had this year. Winning SECs for the first time since 1989 and for fighting as hard as they did today, even though we didn’t perform as well as we could have," she continued. "We will learn from this and try again next year to bring home UF’s first title."

Good year Gators. We'll be back next season in full-force.

Go Gators!
