Chomping At Bits: 4/18 Weekend Recap

It was business as usual for the Florida Gators this past weekend.

The Florida Men's Golf team captured the 200th SEC Championship for the University on Sunday. Andres Echavarria took home some honors as well. Full recap and scores can be viewed here.

"I felt like we had the best team," said head coach Buddy Alexander. "I felt pretty comfortable coming in here even though our last tournament wasn’t so great. I was a little nervous in that we kind of blew a six-shot lead at the Schenkel (Invitational) about a month ago and we hadn’t won in a while. We just felt like it was our turn to win, if we played like we played all year."

The baseball team had a pretty decent weekend as well. They won the weekend series against the Georgia Bulldogs. Preston Tucker was far and away the MVP of the weekend. It's always feels good to beat the Bulldogs. No matter what the sport is. The Gators play UCF next in Orlando.

Gymnast Marissa King won the 2011 Vault NCAA Championship. Check out the story courtesy of Gatorzone.

"I still can’t really believe I’m national champion. Going into the vault final, I knew that I had a chance but I didn’t focus on the general outcome. I just went out and did my two vaults just like I do in practice. It was great going into the competition confident with both vaults. I was very pleased with the one and a half vault. I did it exactly as I wanted to and have been doing it through the season. On the full, I had a hop back but luckily the overall outcome was great," King said. "It was great accomplishment. It will take a while to sink in and I can’t wait to be with my team."

The gymnastics team has always been (for the last decade or so anyway) one of the better teams at the University of Florida. That trend is looking to continue.

Track star (and football player) Jeff Demps also had a fantastic weekend. Running a 9.96 (wind aided) in the 100m at the Tom Jones Memorial Classic.

The Gators also won some player of the week honors. Three of them to be exact. Kelsey Bruder was named SEC Softball Player of the Week, Allie Will was named SEC Women's Tennis Player of the Week and lacrosse star Kitty Cullen was named WomensLax.com National Player of the Week.
