Jeff Demps may be the fastest man in college football and a Doak Walker Award watch list member, but if rumors are to be believed, he might not be a member of the Florida Gators football team for very much longer. Now, I've never been one to buy into rumors or anything like that, but would something like this really be all that shocking?
I don't really think so.
Is Jeff Demps' future in the NFL or on the track? We've discussed this before here at Alligator Army and ESPN even did a piece in late June on the subject. I've said before that Demps was always more likely to run track after his time in a Gators uniform was up. When I said that though, I figured he'd finish this season.
But then Dan Hicken started tweeting:
This whole thing started when Demps was left off Florida's players list for SEC Media Days. But then again, this isn't like this is the first time that this issue has been brought up. This talk seems to happen every year.
Now this is something completely different. What this also shows (possibly) is a difference between the coaching styles of Will Muschamp and Urban Meyer. Meyer clearly had no problems with Demps running track while he maintained his spot on the football team. Demps missed a few practices here and there because of track, but he was always ready when it was game time.
Will Muschamp, on the other hand, appears to be lining up on the other side of the aisle. If Muschamp really is pressing Demps to make a decision soon, there is no telling as to what will happen. Demps is currently running at an event in Italy, and with fall practice starting relatively soon, we should know something sooner rather than later.
