In case you were wondering: Yes, things do happen to Florida sports other than football in July. Yahoo!'s Jason King talked to Mike Rosario and Billy Donovan about the resurgent Gators basketball program heading into the 2011-12 season, and got a lot of the "Well, we have talent, but..." talk that's going to dog this team until that talent proves to be more than a bunch of names people know with Rivals stars that don't matter.
"It’s a great situation to have," said Donovan, whose squad advanced to the Elite Eight last season. "But I realize there are a lot of people out there saying, 'OK, how is this going to work?'"
Donovan isn’t sure himself.
All he knows is that three of the guards will likely start, and the fourth will play – a lot.
Want to bet that we'll see Erving Walker, Kenny Boynton, and Bradley Beal — the guard best-equipped to guard the occasional small forward — starting, with Rosario providing a scoring spark off the bench?
Want to bet that we hear at least one of those four guards and Scottie Wilbekin (I'm thinking Boynton, whose spot has Beal's and Rosario's name all over it if he can't improve his shot selection) grouse about playing time?
2011-12 Florida's going to look a lot like Jay Wright's Villanova teams of the last five years. Those teams have one Final Four loss and another Elite Eight loss (to Florida) since 2006. If that's the ceiling for these Gators, it's not all that bad a ceiling.
But short guys don't always hit the ceiling.
