Florida can now roll back the number on its "Days Without An Arrest" board: Matt Watts of the Miami Herald brings the news that redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Trip Thurman is facing two separate misdemeanor charges.
Watts reports that Thurman was originally arrested (technically; "cited" would be accurate, too) for possession of a forged ID card in June, a third-degree felony, but that lawyer Huntley Johnson was able to get the charge reduced to a second-degree misdemeanor and secure deferred prosecution for Thurman in late September.
That would have been all well and good if Thurman hadn't been cited for underage possession of alcohol the next night at a Corey Smith concert:
According to a Gainesille Police Department record, officer Lonnie Scott observed Thurman holding a half-full can of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, and when he saw the officer, Thurman "immediately placed the drink down on the ground (next to his left foot) in an attempt to discard the alcoholic beverage." The report also states that Thurman had black "X's" on his hands to indicate that he was under the age of 21.
Carrying a fake ID and underage drinking, taken by themselves, are pretty benign crimes, and strict enforcement of the laws Thurman violated would get thousands more college kids arrested per year. But Thurman getting arrested two days after accepting a deferred prosecution agreement over a PBR is embarrassingly dumb.
Thurman's a reserve lineman, playing very sparingly in 2012, and I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't play this weekend due to an unannounced suspension. I also don't think Florida would miss him much.
