Florida Gators injury report: Final 2013 season accounting has 23 players missing games

Our chronicling of Florida's injuries for 2013 comes to an end. Sort of.

Al Messerschmidt

Florida's final injury report for the 2013 season is a list filled with woes and woe and whoa.

29 scholarship players missed snaps due to injury for Florida in 2013. 23 scholarship players missed full games. And 17 Gators on scholarship suffered season-ending injuries — though six of those "season-ending" injuries were injuries that happened during or after Florida's loss to Georgia Southern and kept players out of the Gators' season-ending loss to Florida State.

Season-Ending Injuries

Player Position Injury Date
Andre Debose WR Torn ACL August 6
Matt Rolin OLB Torn ACL August 8
Chaz Green RT Torn labrum ~August 26
Nick Washington CB Shoulder September 11
Marcus Roberson CB Knee, ankle injuries ~September 20
Jeff Driskel QB Broken fibula September 21
Colin Thompson TE Foot stress fracture ~September 23
Dominique Easley DT Torn ACL, meniscus September 24
Matt Jones RB Torn meniscus October 12
Tyler Murphy QB AC joint sprain October 12
Jeremi Powell LB Torn ACL October 19
D.J. Humphries LT MCL sprain October 28
Tyler Moore OT Broken right arm November 5
Antonio Morrison LB Torn meniscus November 9
Michael Taylor LB MCL strain November 23
Alex Anzalone LB Dislocated shoulder November 23
Joey Ivie DT Lacerated heel ~November 26

New additions here: Roberson, Thompson, Murphy, Humphries, Taylor, Anzalone, Ivie, and Burton.

Roberson missed Florida's third, fourth, and fifth games with a knee injury, returned for three more games, got hurt again against Vanderbilt, and missed Florida's final three games. Roberson was suspended for the South Carolina game, but Will Muschamp said after that game that he "couldn't have gone" against the Gamecocks due to injury even without a suspension.

Thompson suffered a stress fracture in his foot and did not play for Florida after the Tennessee game. You know how much Florida didn't get out of the tight end position in 2013? Of the Gators' tight ends, Thompson best combined blocking skills with receiving prowess. Thompson missing nine games probably crippled Florida's ability to use tight ends as in-line receivers.

Humphries, who dealt with knee tweaks all year long, didn't play after the Missouri game. Considering that he was missing snaps as early as Florida's season opener with injuries, it's likely he was never 100 percent this year.

Murphy suffered his shoulder injury against LSU, then soldiered through games against Missouri, Georgia, and Vanderbilt, getting diminishing returns, before not seeing the field again. Remember rumors flying late in the week before the Missouri game about Murphy having suffered a season-ending injury against LSU? It turns out that he did, sort of — but he still played three more games, and was never ruled out for the season.

Taylor, Anzalone, Ivie, and Burton all suffered their "season-ending" injuries between the first whistle of the Georgia Southern game and the end of the game against Florida State, and I sort of doubt any of those injuries would likely have been "season-ending" if Florida had played in a bowl game. Roll back the "real" number of season-ending injuries to 13 if you want, but all of the 17 players above had their seasons ended by injury.

Of the 28 Florida players who missed snaps this fall thanks to injury, 20 were offensive and defensive starters, so long as we count Anzalone — who became a first-stringer on the fly against Georgia Southern in the wake of Taylor's injury, then promptly got hurt, leaving walk-on David Campbell to play in his stead.

Just five players made starts in all 12 games for Florida: Wide receiver Quinton Dunbar, defensive end Dante Fowler, Jr., offensive lineman Max Garcia, center Jonotthan Harrison, and safety Cody Riggs. And even those players didn't have unblemished seasons: Dunbar and Harrison memorably blocked each other against Georgia Southern, Harrison was ejected against Arkansas, and Riggs was ejected on the first play from scrimmage against Missouri. Three of those players were dinged during the year, too: Garcia and Harrison both missed snaps with undisclosed injuries against Miami, and Fowler went down against Missouri, though he did not miss any snaps.

The linebacking corps came from deep in the pack to become Florida's most injured unit late, though quarterback also has an argument. Just four linebackers — Neiron Ball, Jarrad Davis, Darrin Kitchens, and Ronald Powell — were fully healthy at the end of the year, and Kitchens and Powell had both missed games due to injury. (Daniel McMillian, a special teams contributor, was dealing with a thumb issue that has prevented him from playing linebacker, according to Muschamp, but it's not clear if he was in line for snaps regardless of that injury.)
