Loucheiz Purifoy arrested, charged with marijuana possession

Florida's Loucheiz Purifoy is known for lighting people up on the field, and you know where the rest of this sentence is going so I'll spare you the pun.

USA TODAY Sports

Florida cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy was arrested and charged with marijuana possession early Sunday morning, as first reported by 247Sports' Thomas Goldkamp.

Goldkamp reports that a Gainesville Police officer found "a baggie containing 2.5 grams of cannabis" near the emergency brake of a car Purifoy was a passenger in after it was pulled over for a traffic violation just after midnight on Saturday. Purifoy was charged with posssession of less than 20 grams of cannabis, a misdemeanor, received a notice to appear on Wednesday, and has a court date set for February 21.

Goldkamp reports that Purifoy's arrest is the eighth marijuana-related arrest since Will Muschamp was hired as Florida head coach in January 2011. I believe it is the first for possession since the fall citation of JaFar Mann, who later transferred, for possession in his dorm room. This arrest is also Florida's first since Jessamen Dunker was arrested on felony charges of grand theft for an incident involving a scooter. (For more on that story, including details on Dunker's lawyer attempting to have charges reduced, head to our StoryStream.)

This is the first arrest for Purifoy, who will reportedly practice at wide receiver in the spring after starring at cornerback and on special teams in 2012, and, as it is a misdemeanor, it is very unlikely to end his Florida career. A Florida spokesman was not available for comment to Goldkamp, but it's a good bet that Purifoy will either be suspended for Florida's season opener in the fall or face internal punishment that will not become public.
