Alex Anzalone injury: Gators' freshman LB has shoulder surgery, will miss rest of spring

One of Florida's finest recruiting coups has become one of its first injury casualties of 2013.

Florida freshman linebacker Alex Anzalone injured his right shoulder during practice over the weekend, has had surgery to repair it, and will be out for the rest of the Gators' spring practices, Will Muschamp told reporters on Tuesday.

The injury was to the labrum in Anzalone's right shoulder, and suffered during a tackling drill. In Richard Johnson's report from Saturday's open practice, he mentioned Anzalone hurting his shoulder.

Anzalone needing surgery suggests it was likely a tear in the labrum significant enough to require repair that went beyond healing.

Anzalone was slated as Antonio Morrison's backup at middle linebacker, and his injury will likely get a player or two set to move outside another look at the Mike position. Michael Taylor, who has played at middle linebacker at Florida, would be my best bet to get more time there this spring.

Anzalone, a five-star recruit according to 247Sports, flipped from Notre Dame to Florida in the final week of the decision process for early-enrolling Florida recruits, to some consternation from Fighting Irish fans. He should be recovered in plenty of time for fall practice.
