Florida right tackle Chaz Green will miss the 2013 season after suffering a torn labrum, Will Muschamp announced Monday. Tyler Moore, who transferred to Florida from Nebraska in 2012, is listed as the starter at Green's RT spot on the Gators' depth chart for Saturday's game against Toledo.
Green made 10 starts in 2012, and was fourth among returning Florida offensive players in career starts behind Jon Halapio, Jonotthan Harrison, and Trey Burton. Green was also by far Florida's most experienced offensive tackle: His 19 career starts are just one fewer than the 20 combined starts that Max Garcia (11 at Maryland), Moore (four at Nebraska), Kyle Koehne (three at right tackle in 2012) and D.J. Humphries (two in 2012) have made in their careers.
To be candid, though, I'm not sure that swapping Green for Moore weakens the Gators at right tackle. Green had a very good 2011 as a redshirt freshman, earning Freshman All-American and Freshman All-SEC honors, but was inconsistent for much of 2012, often yielding just as much pressure as the oft-maligned Xavier Nixon did despite usually facing the lesser of opponents' two defensive ends. Moore has looked good in practice, and has a slightly better frame — Moore is listed at 6'6" and 320 pounds, Green at 6'5" and 300 pounds, and his practicing at a variety of positions this fall speaks to his versatility.
Moore having to slide over means that Koehne is Florida's starter at right guard for the moment, and though the Gators will likely be able to get away with that against Toledo and a young Miami defensive line, the swift return of Jon Halapio, currently out with a torn pectoral muscle, becomes much more crucial when Koehne, who would ideally be a solid backup at a variety of spots, is asked to be a starter. If Koehne struggles as a starter, and Halapio's recovery takes longer than anticipated — he is expected to be back for Florida's game against Tennessee on September 14 — Florida could look to move Moore back to right guard and bring in mountain-slash-tackle Trenton Brown at right tackle.
Green's season-ending injury is the third suffered by a Gator this fall: Wide receiver Andre Debose tore his ACL earlier in August, followed by Matt Rolin tearing his ACL for a second time just two days later.
