Florida 38, Georgia 20: Hard-earned wins go down easy

For once, the Gators earned it.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

It's never felt so right to be wrong.

Florida beat Georgia, 38-20, in Jacksonville on Saturday. And beat is the right verb: Florida dominated this game, and on the ground, and by putting blocks on defenders and running to daylight and by creating their own daylight when none was evident.

This win belonged to Kelvin Taylor, with a career-high 197 rushing yards, eighth-best in Florida history, and two touchdowns, and to Matt Jones, with 192 rushing yards, 11th-best, and two touchdowns. It belonged to every Florida offensive lineman who blocked his ass off all day, and every Florida tight end who blocked his ass off all day, and to every Florida wide receiver who blocked his ass off all day, and to Treon Harris, who handed the ball off and stayed out of the way.

Florida threw one pass in the second half, and six in the game. It didn't matter.

This win belonged to Will Muschamp, who had the chutzpah to call or sign off on a gutsy fake field goal that got Florida level after falling into a 7-0 hole to start the game, and to D.J. Durkin, whose defense played like hellions and punched the ball out, and to Kurt Roper, who called a beautifully ugly game, run after run after run after run after run after run after run.

This game plan was, by turns, desperate and stupid and antediluvian. It didn't matter.

This win belonged to every player and coach who earned it, inch by inch, and to every fan who needed it, for every inch of hair pulled out over Florida football over the last two, three, four, five, six years. It was a hard-earned win.

Hard-earned wins go down easy.
