David Sharpe signs with Florida on National Signing Day 2014: Recruitment, highlights, impact

On National Signing Day, offensive tackle David Sharpe made his commitment to Florida official by signing — perhaps "singing," who can know — his National Letter of Intent and faxing it to some number in Gainesville. Congrats, David: You're a Gator.

Sharpe's recruitment had some twists and turns, but he landed at Florida all the same. His highlights and potential will make you happy that he did.

Recruitment

Sharpe was one of the most sought after and talented offensive lineman in the 2014 class, and he's from a traditional Florida stronghold: Jacksonville. And though Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida State all pursued Sharpe, he ended up staying with the local power, committing to Florida — well, to the "University of Gainesville" — in December. (After attending and playing for The Providence School in the fall, Sharpe has transferred to Fletcher High School to finish his high school career.) Sharpe has one of the highest ceilings in the class and his offer list is further evidence of that fact: Other than Florida, Sharpe held offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, and Tennessee, among others.

Future Impact

I like to describe David Sharpe as an explosive offensive tackle. When one thinks of the word "explosive," one might gather mental images of blazing receivers, corners or running backs. Yet, like former Florida Gator Dominique Easley, Sharpe proves that players can be explosive on the line of scrimmage. When the ball is snapped, Sharpe uses his quickness and pure strength to burst off the line and attack the defensive end.

I expect Sharpe to come to Gainesville and aid a struggling offensive line immediately. David will most likely find time at both the right tackle and left tackle spots behind D.J. Humphries, Tyler Moore and Chaz Green. By the time he finishes his freshman weight program, Sharpe should weigh in at around 300 pounds and stand at 6'6", ideal size for a tackle.
