Florida's 48 for 2014, No. 14: Alex McCalister's time is now

It's time for potential to become production.

How anonymous has Alex McCalister been through his first two-plus years at Florida? I had to check the caption to be sure of which player in the above photo was him. (He's No. 95.)

McCalister stands 6'6" and weighs 245 pounds, according to Florida's roster. That's close to prototypical size for an edge rusher — he could still stand to gain another 15-20 pounds — and McCalister's athleticism has really never been in doubt.

I think you can figure out which hooper is McCalister in this video.

But McCalister's been the definition of a project so far, redshirting in 2012 to bulk up and playing very sparingly in 2013. He had three tackles last year; the picture above is one of his two against Georgia Southern, and he recorded another against Florida State. McCalister played in just five of Florida's other 10 games in 2013, and didn't record any stats in any of them.

Florida could really use a reliable edge rusher beyond Dante Fowler, Jr., both for depth at the BUCK position should Fowler go down and to soak up some of the snaps and reduce his injury risk, and McCalister could be that guy.

He'll have to start making his game match that frame to do so.
