Monday’s Miami Beach Bowl turned out to be a dud of sorts, as Tulsa’s potent offense wiped the floor with Central Michigan in a 55-10 rout. Will another South Florida bowl that takes place in a far less compelling environment be any better on Tuesday?
Boca Raton Bowl
What: The Boca Raton Bowl has been played annually at Florida Atlantic’s creatively named FAU Stadium in 2014. It has tie-ins with the American Athletic Conference and Mid-American Conference, and formerly had one with Conference USA. So, of course, the bowl features AAC and C-USA teams this year.
Who: The 2016 Miami Beach Bowl matches up C-USA’s Western Kentucky, a 10-3 team that is second nationally in scoring behind Louisville, and Memphis, which is 8-4, and not as good as it was in 2015, but still managed to beat Houston.
Where: FAU Stadium, on the FAU campus. It has its own Subway!
When: 7:00 p.m., December 20. There is no Monday Night Football to avoid with an afternoon kickoff on a Tuesday, after all.
Why and how: ESPN (which owns and operates the game) co-created the Boca Raton Bowl with the MAC in 2013, per the history section of the curiously-fonted Boca Raton Bowl website. The game played host to the MAC and C-USA champions in 2014 — Marshall trampled Northern Illinois, 52-23 — and then acquired a title sponsor, Jarden subsidiary Marmot, in 2015. (Business Wikipedia page rabbit hole fact: Jarden is now owned by Newell Brands, which also owns Rubbermaid, Bicycle playing cards, Sharpie, Calphalon, and Yankee Candle, among a slew of other brands — and Newell started as a company that made shower curtain rods.) Perhaps realizing that the Boca Raton Bowl was a poor fit for a winter-weather apparel company, Marmot did not renew its sponsorship of the game for 2016.
What do the players get? Gift suite “and other items.”
How much is that worth? Who can know, really?
Should I watch? The strongest argument in favor of watching is that Western Kentucky’s offense was dope all year, thanks to Jeff Brohm’s guidance. But Brohm is gone, having decamped for the ostensibly greener pastures of Purdue, and who knows how the Hilltoppers will play without him? Memphis might allow a bunch of points, though: In the Tigers’ four losses, they’ve given up 49.5 points per contest.
