Florida swung and missed at defensive tackle in its 2016 recruiting class, so the Gators have a lot of work to do with wide-load players in the 2017 cycle. On Wednesday, they landed their first defensive tackle for the 2017 class in the hefty, explosive Jordon Scott of Pinellas Park High. The news was first reported by 247Sports reporter Ryan Bartow.
Scott's certainly got the size to play inside as a space eater, at 6'1" and 340ish pounds, a weight that makes me think he might drop some pounds at Florida. (And given that his height is listed at 6'0" on some sites, slimming down might be an especially great idea.) But he also has athleticism, specifically in his acceleration, that belies his size.
Before a minute elapses on his highlights, Scott has utterly destroyed a hapless guard en route to a sack, shredded a double-team and exploded to drive a running back earthward, escaped a two-man cut block to find a back behind the line, and chased down another back from behind.
Clearly, he can move quite well, even at his current weight, which is part of why he held offers from both Florida and Florida State as a consensus three-star prospect. I have to imagine his weight is part of why he's not more highly-rated, but if the plays he can make at that tonnage are closer to what the Gators would get from him as a college player, he's probably underrated, if not significantly so.
Scott joins five offensive players in Florida's 2017 recruiting class, which now sits just within the national top 50 after a slow start to the cycle. The quality is arguably there with every player in the Gators' flock, as all of their commits but Scott are seen as four-star prospects per at least one rankings system — all five are, according to ESPN — but quantity will likely be part of what Florida has to manage through the summer months.
