Week 2 college football TV schedule and open thread

Here’s what to watch before and after the Gators play.

NCAA Football: Villanova at Pittsburgh Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The second week of the 2016 college football season does not feature the greatest group of games, at least on paper anyway. But who am I to complain about actual live college football games? (No one, that’s who.)

Florida pops up in the afternoon slot today as they kick off SEC play by hosting Kentucky at 3:30 p.m. on CBS. After that game, feel free to come back to this thread to comment while watching any of the later games.

Here are our picks for today’s viewing windows:

Early (12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Eastern)

Penn State at Pittsburgh (12:00 p.m., ESPN): These two Pennsylvania based teams hate each other. They used to put their rivalry to the test on the field very often, but have not played in 16 years now. The two played annually from the 1930s until the 1990s when their meetings became more sporadic. The last time the two played was in 2000.

UCF at Michigan (12:00 p.m., ABC): The No. 5 Wolverines pummeled Hawaii last week, 63-3, and Central Florida opened its season under new head coach Scott Frost with a 38-0 home win over South Carolina State. Michigan is heavily favored over the visiting Knights.

NC State at East Carolina (12:00 p.m., ESPNU): The Pirates are currently on a five game ACC team winning streak, which includes a win over the Wolfpack in 2013. East Carolina also has a new coach in Scottie Montgomery, after somewhat confusingly firing Ruffin McNeill last year.

Afternoon (3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eastern)

Obviously, you will be watching the Gators play Kentucky (3:30 p.m., CBS).

Evening (7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Eastern)

After the Florida game is over, you can spend your evening (hopefully) celebrating the Gators’ 30th victory over the Wildcats and watching some of these games.

Arkansas at TCU (7:00 p.m., ESPN): This game was a little more exciting before both teams struggled last week in their openers. The No. 15 Horned Frogs pulled away late from North Dakota State, winning 59-41. Arkansas beat Louisiana Tech by one point, after trailing the Bulldogs into the fourth quarter.

South Carolina at Mississippi State (7:00 p.m., ESPN2): Last week, Will Muschamp’s Gamecocks won their opener at Vanderbilt, and if you missed what happened to Mississippi State – they lost to South Alabama as their winning field goal attempt hit the upright and missed. SEC Nation will be broadcasting from Starkville this week.

Tennessee vs. Virginia Tech (8:00 p.m., ABC): It’s the sports spectacle that you didn’t know you needed to see. The No. 17 Volunteers will play the Hokies at Bristol Motor Speedway, a NASCAR track in Bristol, Tennessee. This game should set a new college football attendance record as around 150,000 fans are expected.
