The Florida Gators lost again on Saturday — this time to the South Carolina Gamecocks, this time by a 28-20 score, this time despite two prospective pick-sixes basically on the same possession getting fouled up by a fumble at the goal line and a shoestring tackle and a beautiful deep pass from Feleipe Franks to a receiver who was turned around and facing him 20 yards behind the defense only yielding a first and goal and a three-interception performance from a defense that hemorrhaged yardage but never quit for a second.
The Florida Gators will probably lose on the next two Saturdays, too, with dozens of players out suspended or hurt — Florida lost Malik Zaire, T.J. McCoy, and maybe Elijah Conliffe in this game, and has just over 50 healthy scholarship players left in a sport that allows teams to carry 85 — and an offense still struggling to find anything resembling rhythm.
And when the season ends, the Florida Gators are going to have achieved only the worst or second-worst record of any Florida team in my lifetime.
But, really, it’s just football, and Florida’s women’s basketball program begins its 2017-18 season under a promising new coach in like 15 minutes.
See you here next week!
