Since Tim Tebow last started at quarterback for the Florida Gators, the following humans have started at quarterback for Florida:
- John Brantley
- Trey Burton
- Jacoby Brissett
- Jeff Driskel
- Tyler Murphy
- Skyler Mornhinweg
- Treon Harris
- Will Grier
- Luke Del Rio
- Austin Appleby
- Feleipe Franks
Malik Zaire will become the 12th Florida starting quarterback this decade in a matter of moments, and Florida will be in just as strange a situation with him as it was when, say, Mornhinweg was elevated to starter in November 2013.
Zaire is Florida’s first lefty starter since Tebow — which is neat — and he takes over a 3-4 team that just got pounded to dust by Georgia in a game so dispiritingly one-sided that it hardly even mattered to Jim McElwain’s job status. Florida will need to win at least once in two SEC road trips over the next two weeks to ensure that its season-ending clash with Florida State is not a scrap for bowl eligibility on the Gators’ part.
The Gators will make every attempt to get wins this month under Randy Shannon, who was, less than a decade ago, upset by Urban Meyer kicking field goals against Miami. And they begin by playing against a team that wasn’t even in the SEC at that point.
Things are weird, man. Can they be good, too, for a change?
Go Gators.
