Weekend Open Thread: Assorted Alligator activities

The Gators are busy this weekend.

This weekend’s action sees two Florida teams competing for championships - an SEC tournament title is on the line for the men’s basketball team, and the men’s track and field team has a shot at an NCAA Indoor title. Florida also has Gators grinding on tennis courts, golf courses, lacrosse fields, and baseball and softball diamonds.

Below you’ll find what is happening in Gator sports this weekend, as well as how to follow along.

Friday, March 10

Men’s tennis
Florida vs. Florida State, 6:00 p.m.: As part of College MatchDay, the Gators will face the rival Seminoles in Orlando. Florida currently has a nine-match win streak against FSU.

Track and field
NCAA Indoor Championships, 6:15 p.m., (ESPN3/WatchESPN, Stats): The Gators enter the competition with the No.1-ranked men’s team in the nation, who are favored to win a fourth indoor title this weekend. Florida also has a few women at the event competing for individual titles. Friday’s events include women’s shot put, men’s and women’s long jump, men’s 60-meter hurdles, and several preliminary races.

Baseball
Florida vs. Seton Hall, 6:30 p.m., (SEC Network+/WatchESPN, Stats): It’s Faedo Friday again as the Gators try to bounce back after consecutive midweek losses to Florida Gulf Coast. The Gators host Seton Hall for the first time and hope to continue this season’s streak of undefeated outcomes in weekend games.

Gymnastics
Florida vs. West Virginia, 6:45 p.m., (SEC Network+/WatchESPN, Stats): The regular season finale for the No. 3 Gators is also Senior Night. Florida faces the No. 22 Mountaineers, who are the fifth top-25 opponent to be hosted by the Gators in the O’Connell Center this season.

Men’s basketball
Florida vs. Vanderbilt, 7:00 p.m., (SEC Network/WatchESPN, Listen): The No. 2 seed Gators open SEC Tournament play against the No. 7 seed Commodores. Florida last played Vanderbilt just six days ago, in their regular-season finale. I don’t have to remind you that the Gators dropped their two games against the ‘Dores this season, by two points each time, and would love to be able to pick up a win in round three.

Saturday, March 11

Women’s golf
SunTrust Invitational, 8:15 a.m.: The Gators host their only home tournament this weekend.

Softball
Florida vs. Missouri, 11:00 a.m., (ESPNU, Listen, Stats): The No. 3 Gators open conference play by hosting the No. 24 Tigers for a Saturday through Monday three-game weekend series. Florida has a 7-4 all-time record over Mizzou.

Lacrosse
Florida vs. Stony Brook, 1:00 p.m. (Watch, Listen, Stats): It’s the third top-ten match-up for the No. 3 Gators this season, as they return home after playing their last three games away to host the No. 7 Seawolves. (Yes, seawolves. What the heck is a seawolf? Their mascot looks like a wolf, but the only actual animal I could find with such a moniker is a hideous fish. According to the school’s website, a seawolf is a “mythical sea creature” that would bring good luck to anyone fortunate enough to view it. This concludes my tangent about seawolves.)

Women’s tennis
Florida vs. South Carolina, 1:00 p.m. (Stats): The undefeated No. 1 Gators host the No. 24 Gamecocks, and are playing a home match for the first time since February 19. Florida is still sporting that 163-game active home win streak - the longest such active streak in any NCAA Division I team sport.

Track and field
NCAA Indoor Championships, 3:00 p.m., (ESPN3/WatchESPN, Stats): The Gators continue competing at the championships, which are being held in College Station. All of Saturday’s events are finals, and they include men’s weight throw, men’s high jump, men’s and women’s triple jump, men’s and women’s 400 meters, men’s 60-meter hurdles, men’s 800 meters, and men’s and women’s 4x400 relay.

Men’s basketball
SEC Tournament Semifinal - TBD, 3:30 p.m., (ESPN/WatchESPN): Should the Gators defeat Vanderbilt on Friday, and advance in the SEC tournament, they would play at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday (the official given time is 25 minutes after the conclusion of the preceding game, which tips at 1 p.m. Eastern). Florida would play the winner of Friday’s Game 10, between No. 6 seed Ole Miss and No. 3 seed Arkansas.

Baseball
Florida vs. Seton Hall, 4:00 p.m., (SECNetwork+/WatchESPN, Listen, Stats): The Gators again host the Pirates, this time with Brady Singer on the mound. This is the first game of a Saturday double-header for Florida, as Sunday’s game was rescheduled to Saturday night due to potential inclement weather.

Baseball
Florida vs. Seton Hall, 7:00 p.m., (SECNetwork+/WatchESPN, Listen, Stats): Jackson Kowar will pitch in Florida’s finale against Seton Hall. Which, as mentioned above, was rescheduled from Sunday due to rain.

Sunday, March 12

Women’s golf
SunTrust Invitational, 9:15 a.m.: Florida continues competition in their only home tournament.

Men’s basketball
SEC Tournament Final - TBD, 1:00 p.m., (ESPN/WatchESPN): Should Florida make it to the final game of the tournament (by taking down Vanderbilt on Friday and Ole Miss/Arkansas on Saturday), the Gators would take the court Sunday afternoon, against a presently undetermined opponent, with the SEC Tournament title on the line.

Men’s tennis
Florida vs. South Carolina, 1:00 p.m., (Watch, Stats): The Gators return home to host the Gamecocks after their College MatchDay appearance in Orlando.

Softball
Florida vs. Missouri, 6:00 p.m., (ESPNU, Listen, Stats): The Gators tangle with the Tigers for the second-game of their three-game SEC-opening series. Florida concludes the series with Mizzou on Monday.

Track and field
NCAA Indoor Championships, 7:00 p.m. (ESPN2): The competition ends on Saturday, but a two-hour re-broadcast of the championship airs Sunday night on ESPN2.
