Weekend Open Thread: Gainesville grinding

New, 1 comment

Most Florida teams are competing at home this weekend.

There may not be as many events listed on this weekend’s schedule as there has been lately, as certain teams are off or have their seasons winding down, but there are still plenty of Gators in action. Florida’s baseball and softball teams both host SEC rivals for weekend series, women’s tennis and lacrosse teams play at home, and there is some football thing happening tonight that you may be marginally aware of, I guess.

Below you’ll find what is happening in Gator sports this weekend, as well as how to follow along.

Friday, April 7

Baseball
Florida vs. Tennessee, 5:00 p.m. (SEC Network+/WatchESPN, Listen, Stats): The Gators host the Vols in a three-game SEC series. Coming into the weekend, Florida is 7-1 since being swept by Auburn to start conference play (and with one game “controversiallycalled for weather in that span, as well). Six of those seven wins were over top-25 opponents (two over No. 4 LSU, one over No. 10 FSU, and three over No. 23 Missouri).

Men’s tennis
Florida vs. Georgia, 6:00 p.m. (Watch, Stats): The last time that the Gators were in action they were upset by Kentucky. Florida is back on the road, facing the 2016 SEC Champion Bulldogs, who are currently unbeaten in conference play. The men’s tennis team is the only Gator team competing away from home this weekend.

Women’s tennis
Florida vs. Ole Miss, 5:00 p.m. (Watch, Stats): The top-ranked Gators host their penultimate home match of the season when the Rebels come to down. Florida has won their last ten meetings with Ole Miss. The last time the Rebels defeated the Gators was in 2009 in Oxford.

Football
Orange & Blue Debut, 7:30 p.m. (SEC Network/WatchESPN, Listen, Stats): The Gators’ annual spring game kicks off tonight. Savor your last moments of Florida football before fall camp is here. Once again, all eyes will be on the quarterbacks, looking for signs of a skillful signal caller who can move the offense efficiently.

Saturday, April 8

Lacrosse
Florida vs. Cincinnati, 12:00 p.m. (Watch, Listen, Stats): After routing Marquette earlier this week, the No. 3 Gators return home for a midday tilt with the Bearcats, looking to extend their perfect streak in Big East play. The Gators ranked first in offense in the conference, but are followed in those rankings by Cincinnati.

Baseball
Florida vs. Tennessee, 6:00 p.m. (SEC Network/WatchESPN, Listen, Stats): The Gators continue their weekend series against SEC foe Tennessee on Singer Saturday. Coming into the weekend, Florida had an 81-37 all-time record against the Vols in Gainesville.

Softball
Florida vs. Georgia, 6:00 p.m. (SEC Network+/WatchESPN, Listen, Stats): The Gators remain at home this weekend and will begin a three-game series with Georgia on Saturday, running through Monday. Earlier this week, Florida defeated North Florida.

Sunday, April 9

Baseball
Florida vs. Tennessee, 1:00 p.m. (SEC Network/WatchESPN, Listen, Stats): The Gators conclude their weekend series with the Vols. Jackson Kowar will be on the mound for Florida.

Men’s tennis
Florida vs. Tennessee, 1:00 p.m. (Stats): The Gators continue their road play this weekend with the Volunteers in Knoxville. The two met last in the Gators’ regular season finale a year ago, which Florida won 6-1.

Women’s tennis
Florida vs. Mississippi State, 1:00 p.m. (Watch, Stats): The Gators take the court for their final home match of the season. Florida hosts the other SEC team from the Magnolia State to conclude home play. The Gators will also recognize their three seniors in a pre-match ceremony.

Softball
Florida vs. Georgia, 7:00 p.m. (SEC Network/WatchESPN, Listen, Stats): The Gators continue their SEC weekend series against the Bulldogs. Coming into the weekend, Florida had only allowed one run or less in 29 of the 36 games they had played this season. The final game of the series will be played on Monday night at 7:00 p.m.
