Florida football recruiting: 2019 OL Wardrick Wilson commits to Gators

The Gators land another commit from Randy Shannon’s alma mater.

The Florida Gators have had significant success recruiting Miami’s Norland High School since hiring notable alumnus Randy Shannon as Jim McElwain’s co-defensive coordinator and South Florida consigliere in 2014.

And that trend has now continued into the 2019 recruiting class, as 2019 offensive lineman Wardrick Wilson, a Viking now like Shannon once was, committed to the Gators during their Friday Night Lights recruiting camp on Friday.

Wilson is a currently unrated prospect, and appears to have no offers from any other schools sans Kentucky, which is both a little concerning given that he hails from the recruiting hotbed that is Miami and likely no big deal, given that many 2019 prospects are just now attending their first summer camps ... and that Wilson doesn’t even have highlights on his Hudl page.

But at 6’4” and 300ish pounds, Wilson clearly stands taller than Florida offensive line coach Brad Davis — himself a former offensive lineman at Oklahoma — and has long arms that look like they could maul a defensive end or two. And, obviously, if anyone is likely to have an inside line on prospects at Norland, it’s Shannon, who has helped bring linebackers Vosean Joseph and Rayshad Jackson from Norland to Gainesville.

If Wilson grows into a player of at least Joseph’s level, he will prove to be a good take.

Wilson becomes Florida’s 10th commitment for its top-rated 2019 recruiting class, fourth commitment since Tuesday, and second of the Friday Night Lights weekend.
