Florida football recruiting: Safety C.J. Smith decommits from Gators

Is there an echo in here?

After an extended Independence Day weekend, Oxbridge Academy safety C.J. Smith is cutting ties with the Florida Gators, announcing his decommitment from the Gators on Twitter on Wednesday night.

Smith had previously committed to Florida in March, giving the Gators more 2018 commits than 2019 commits. His decommitment knocks Florida’s 2018 class back down to just seven commits — fewer, still, than the nine in the 2019 class that remains No. 1 nationally — and to the No. 56 spot nationally.

Florida could still surge up those rankings if it can reel in a few of its bigger-name targets before the end of the summer, but, for now, the Gators are stuck in neutral, along with a few other big-time programs that have yet to do much more than start their 2018 classes.

Maybe the most interesting thing about Smith’s decommitment, however, is how the note he tweeted echoes South Florida running back James Cook’s note announcing his decommitment from Florida State almost verbatim.

At least Smith didn’t try and fail to write the number sign?
