Weekend Open Thread: Home happenings

New, 2 comments

The majority of this weekend’s action, including Saturday’s Orange and Blue Game, is in Gainesville.

The big event this weekend is Florida’s annual spring football scrimmage game, the Orange and Blue Game. However, there are loads of other Florida Gators sports events this weekend - including a particularly packed Saturday slate (in part due to Sunday’s weather forecast).

Below you’ll find what is happening in Gator sports this weekend, as well as how to follow along.

Friday, April 13

Men’s golf
Mason Rudolph Championship, All Day: Florida is in Nashville for this weekend’s Mason Rudolph, defending their 2017 title at the event. Last year, the Gators shot 13 under-par in the final round to claim the title by one stroke.

Women’s golf
Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, All Day: Florida is in the Peach State this weekend for a tournament tune-up before next week’s SEC championships. The Gators will compete against five SEC teams including the hosting Bulldogs.

Track and field
Tom Jones Memorial, 11:00 a.m.: In Gainesville, Florida hosts the Tom Jones Memorial for the next-to-last meet before SEC Championships. Events began this morning and run through Friday evening.

Men’s tennis
Florida vs. Alabama, 5:00 p.m.: On Senior Day, the Gators host the Crimson Tide to close out the regular season. With a win, Florida will clinch the No. 3 seed in the SEC Tournament and a bye into the quarterfinals.

Softball
Florida vs. South Carolina, 6:00 p.m.: The No. 6 Gators host the No. 11 Gamecocks for the first game of a three-game series. Coming into the weekend, Florida sits atop the SEC regular season standings, with Georgia in second and South Carolina in third.

Baseball
Florida vs. Missouri, 6:30 p.m.: The top-ranked Gators begin their three-game weekend series with the Tigers. Coming into the weekend, Florida is 17-4 all-time against Mizzou, with a 10-1 mark in Gainesville. The Tigers have not won a game at Florida since joining the SEC.

Saturday, April 14

Men’s golf
Mason Rudolph Championship, All Day: Florida continues competition in the Music City at the Vanderbilt Legions Club. The Gators are paired with the host Commodores and Alabama on the course.

Women’s golf
Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, All Day: Florida concludes its regular season at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Three rounds will be played over the two days of competition.

Volleyball
Florida vs. Stetson, 10:00 a.m.: The Gators continue their slate of spring scrimmage competition - but this time Florida has hosting duties.

Women’s tennis
Florida vs. Vanderbilt, 11:00 a.m.: The winner of this match takes the SEC regular season title. The No. 10 Gators and No. 3 Commodores are both 11-1 in the conference and atop the league standings. Last year, the duo also played for the championship but Vandy was victorious.

Volleyball
Florida vs. Florida State, 11:30 a.m. / 2:30 p.m.: Two games against FSU are on deck for the Gators next. These are the final scheduled games of Florida’s scrimmage season.

Lacrosse
Florida vs. Marquette, 12:00 p.m.: It’s a meeting of Big East undefeateds in Gainesville on Saturday, with the No. 6 Gators putting their 27-game conference win streak on the line against the Golden Eagles.

Softball
Florida vs. South Carolina, 12:00 p.m.: The Gators will play a double-header against the Gamecocks on Saturday, in order to avoid unfavorable weather conditions scheduled for the area on Sunday. Coming into the weekend, Florida has won six of the last seven games against the Gamecocks via run-rule performances.

Softball
Florida vs. South Carolina, TBD: The second game of the Gators’ double-header will commence 30 minutes following the end of their noon meeting with the Gamecocks. As of this writing, Florida leads the nation in shutouts with 23 on the year.

Football
Orange and Blue Game, 3:00 p.m.: The highly anticipated spring coaching debut of Dan Mullen is upon us this weekend. Florida held a draft to choose the teams. View rosters: Orange Team and Blue Team.

Baseball
Florida vs. Missouri, 4:00 p.m.: Like the softball schedule, baseball is now facing a double-header on Saturday due to Sunday’s weather forecast. This weekend against Missouri, the Gators will be facing a heavy lefty pitching rotation for the first time this season.

Baseball
Florida vs. Missouri, 7:30 p.m.: The Gators wrap up their series with the Tigers. This game will take place about 45 minutes after the conclusion of the one preceding it. Coming into this weekend, Jonathan India was on a career-best 20-game hitting streak - the longest such streak by a player under Kevin O’Sullivan at UF. India also lead the SEC in batting average.

Sunday, April 15

Men’s golf
Mason Rudolph Championship, All Day: Florida concludes its regular season in Nashville. The golfing Gators are the only team to compete on Sunday due to expected inclement weather in Florida.
